Big babes

im 36w 5d and my baby measured in the 75th percentile today at roughly 7lb6oz. I even ate less in this pregnancy, healthy weight, and gestational diabetes. I'm having contractions like crazy. Do bigger babes tend to come earlier? Just curious. I have a baby who just turned 11 months and it wasn't this painful with him. He was also smaller.

Re: Big babes

  • I was 39w 5d when I had my daughter and she weighed 10 lbs 6 oz. my contractions hurt like hell and so did all the pressure after the epidural. We weren't expecting her to be that big or I would have had a c section or induced earlier than I was.

  • At my final ultrasound last week (38 weeks) our little boy was measuring 8lbs 1oz and both the technician and my OB have said the scans are not 100% accurate and there is an error margine of 1lb...however from reading different posts on this board, I think the error margins is bigger then that and it's almost impossible to know.

Now I will say, my husband is a big guy and I'm not a size 2 at all, but we were both normal at birth (around 7lbs) so I'm hoping this baby isn't going to be huge lol I saw my OB yesterday and he said he isn't concerned about the size, so fingers crossed he's right! My friend keeps reminding me that the hardest part is the head and shoulders and that a lot of the weight could be in the belly or due to length, so I'm trying my best not to freak out lol

Oh I should mention the tech said in his personal opinion the baby was already closer to 9lbs last week...
  • I wouldn't worry about it being big. But as for your question... My daughter was 8.6 and three days late. This baby will likely be just under 9lbs and I'm sure will arrive right around due date. I don't think there is any corilation to big babies coming earlier. In fact it seems later babies tend to be bigger because they spend more time in the womb packing on those fat rolls :) For me, I'm not worried about anything under 10lbs. And even still, I think it's safer and easier on the body to push out a big baby on its own time than to be forced into labor.
