ORAL THRUSH?

I'm 5 weeks into breast feeding & apparently dealing with oral thrush on baby & on my nipples.. I get pain when feeding but it's nothing I can't handle, I'm more asking for her.. Has anyone tried Gentian Violet? Or know of anything that works? Feedback or reviews are appreciated.

AND YES, I have an appointment with her ped. for this week.. Walk in wait time at her clinic is worst than an E.R. :(

Re: ORAL THRUSH?

  • My doctor gave me OTC lotrimin for my nipples. Of course you have to wash it off before feeding. I'm on a ton of antibiotics that's why I have it but I've been trying to eat a ton of yogurt. I even hear putting a little yogurt on your nipple may help, or taking a probiotic. Of course consult your doctor first on the probiotic.

  • Make sure you wash your bras and stuff in hot water to avoid reinfected yourself
  • I feel so much for you. Me and LO had thrush when he was 2 weeks for 3 weeks. Gen. Violet worked wonders on my nipples. Dr gave lo nystantin but it didn't work. She ended up giving him diflucan(sp?) and I also had to go on it because I ended up with thrush in my mouth (after having to have antibiotics for mastitis). Sanitize EVERYTHING thank comes in contact with your milk/nipples/lo's mouth. I switched to disposable nursing pads and changed them every time I pumped weather they had been leaked in or not. I washed all my clothes and lo's clothes on a sanitary wash also especially my nursing bras.
Best of luck! The thing I had to remember is different remedies work for different people. Thrush does not seem to be a one thing cures all IMO.

  • Thank you everyone & @tropicbreeze I purchased the gen violet but am hesitant to give to baby.. When I looked it up a lot of moms cured both by putting some on the nipples & then feeding right after
  • I was exclusively pumping at the time, so I only put it on myself. As a side note, I did use the gen violet in my mouth because the thrush in my mouth popped up on a weekend and I was totally miserable. It didn't taste too awful but I choose not to put in it my LO's mouth directly. The diflucan from the ped cleared him up in 3 days but I did use it for the full 7 days on him as directed.
