insurance question--Tri Care

this will be my second C-secions and we are done having kids. I was wondering if anyone has had a tummy tuck and muscle repair and the insurance covered it..if so how much coverage was it? Someone told me full but I wasn't really sure how true that was.

Re: insurance question--Tri Care

  • I don't think any insurance will cover that. That's considered cosmetic and I don't think they'll do that at the same time as the c-section anyways. My SIL had an abdominal repair of where her muscles separated carrying twins and that was still considered cosmetic...even with a hernia protruding through!

  • You would really have to ask your insurance company but from what I have heard of insurance will not cover. I believe they might cover another procedure such as the band but only out of medical necessity. But as I said before ask your insurance company because different states companies etc have different coverage.
  • I knew one women who had cosmetic surgery (she had her breasts done) and tricare covered all of it. You really have to "play the game" though. From what she told me Tricare will only cover one cosmetic procedure, but to be able to have it done you have to repeatedly go to mental health and complain that your spouse/yourself thinks you're "ugly" and that it's affecting your life to some great emotional extent. To me, that is playing the game too hard, but I guess it was worth it to her.
  • I used to work for an insurance company and it was extremely rare for it to be covered.

However, a friend just recently had it and it was covered. But I can't remember if it was skin removal and tummy tuck... She had gastric almost two years ago and lost 150 lbs. Because of the skin rolls she was having constant yeast infections and other issues. Her Dr told her that he would submit a pre authorization just to see if it would be covered. The Dr was pretty shocked when it went through and was covered.
  • Call your insurance company and ask.

  • I have Tricare too, and it would literally BLOW MY MIND if they covered this, since they are such cheap asses on anything else. They didn't even want to cover my a/s. They are still cheaping out on covering our breast pumps even tho Congress told them they have to. Call them and ask, and I hope you can find some way to make it work, but I'm really doubtful...

Doesn't look like it unless it is very medically needed.

But I wish. After 3 babies and 3 c sections it would be nice to have done.
  • There's an on going joke with my twin Mom group...if we can get a group discount if we all go in for our tummy tucks together.
  • I'm trying to get my insurance to cover a reduction and a lift... then I plan to pay for the tummy tuck out of pocket.  I am hoping my chronic back issues will help get some of my reduction covered.  If not, looks like I need to start saving up my money... cause it's happening!

  • I work at a military hospital and deal with Tricare more everyday then I desire! I know for a fact it is not covered....the whole one cosmetic thing is not true either....
  • Has to be medically needed. Tricare covered my moms breast reduction, lift, and tummy tuck completely as it was medically needed. Its all how your Dr writes the request since they have to send in a form first. Tricare paid for my breast implants removal but they were causing too much back pain so that was my medical reason.
  • And the them paying for one cosm surgery isn't true at all. Never has been true either.
