Travel for baby shower Advice

So, my family lives three hours away and want to throw me a baby shower. I do get worn down when I travel there but know that I'll need things for the baby before she's born. I read that traveling during your last month is not advised so May is out. But, I'm having a hard time deciding on whether I should have the shower like April 18th (due date is June 6th) or if I should wait until 3 weeks after the baby is born. This is my first baby and I'll probably be driving myself up there for this. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Travel for baby shower Advice

  • If you are the one doing the traveling, go before the baby is born. You don't want to mess with that 3 weeks after giving birth. You will still be healing and finding your groove as far as feeding and naps.... Nope. You will be fine traveling in April. Honestly, given that FTMs are, on average, 10 days late, you'd probably be fine going into the middle or even late May.

  • I'm in the same boat - my mom's shower for us is April 25 and baby is due June 2. It's a 4 hour drive. I'm sure I'll be uncomfortable during travel, but DH will drive me and once I get there it'll be worth it :)

  • I'm driving 5 hours for our baby shower in May! Luckily my fiancé will be driving otherwise I don't think I would do it. Do you have anyone who would drive you? Even just like a friend?
  • I'm having to fly for mine so I'm having one at the end of March during my school's break (also we can't take any personal days after March 31). I registered on Amazon so all the gifts have been arriving at my doorstep over the last couple of days. Pretty great and Amazon makes a thank you card list for me as people purchase.

My shower is a 2.5 hour drive away and it will be on April 18 - my EDD is June 8. Another reason to do it that early is to give yourself time to purchase anything you did not receive!
  • I'm planning on an 8 hour road trip for my sister's wedding at 38 weeks (provided that my doctor approves it). I wouldn't be worried about a brief weekend 3 hours away in May a month out. I wouldn't want to fly that late or anything but a road trip wouldn't be too horrible (aside from stopping to pee a lot).
  • DH and I are planning a kinda babymoon weekend in May to drive 3 1/2 hours down to Milwaukee and catch a Brewers game (mmm, stadium junk food) as long as dr has no concerns. I think if OP had her DH or a friend do the actual driving it might not seem so rough. I know if I had to drive myself I would be concerned about getting tired and not taking proper breaks, but with someone with you it might be easier

  • Definitely would not want to wait until after.... And you are going to need the stuff right away so it's worth a short trip... I can't imagine a doctor would advise against a 3 hour drive unless you had complications.
  • I'd do it before. My family on the east coast is throwing me a shower in a few weeks (March 29) (due date is June 23) and its really as late as my doctor would like me to fly. With that I have to get up every hour to walk.

My SO's family and my best friend are throwing me a second shower April 25th since May didn't have a date that worked for the hosts. The only other option was two weeks before my due date and even with a short drive I didn't want to be that uncomfortable. I already hate 30 minutes in the car at 26 weeks!
