Allergies!!

Allergies (or so I think they are due to timing and the fact that my husband has them too) are kicking my butt right now! Normally I don't get allergies, so this may be some pregnancy thing but I am going to go crazy. I can't breathe and it's keeping me up at night. I think I've only been getting 2... maybe 3 hours of sleep on a good night and am just miserable! Called the doctors office and they told me to take Robotussin. Pretty sure that's for colds, but whatever. I haven't taken that (yet) because I am not comfortable ingesting medications while pregnant if I don't have to. So here is what I have tried so far...

1) Humidifier

2) Brewed Apple Cider Vinegar with peppermint oil (breathe steam)--- recommendation from another pregnant friend. Ouch! I don't recommend it. It burned in a way that didn't feel right and didn't work. I gave up on that one pretty quickly.

3) Regular steam with peppermint oil

4) Vicks VapoRub (safe according to the MA at my doctor's office)

5) Stood in shower with hot water running (only got feet wet) to breathe in steam with the VapoRub on chest... thought it would give it a boost, nope!

Thinking of trying spicy foods although I'm sure if it even helps it won't last long. Anyone have any remedies that give you longer lasting relief? I'm thinking of trying a neti pot although they freak me out just a little.

Re: Allergies!!

  • I take Zyrtec 10mg daily as needed for my allergies. It's safe in pregnancy.

  • Benydryl. It's safe during pregnancy but double check with your doctor before just to verify its okay in YOUR pregnancy. That will help you breathe and sleep.
  • Yes. I use Benadryl to help me sleep at night. Hasn't worked lately. =(
  • Thanks ladies! Out of desperation I went to the pharmacy and bought Benadryl based off of the pharmacist's recommendation. I haven't taken it just yet because I'm still waiting on my Dr's office to call back. As soon as I get the green light from them, I'm taking it! lol

  • Nasal rinse. I prefer the NeilRinse bottle over the Neti Pot. Feel better.
  • I've been using Nasacort, my doctors said it was fine. I was absolutely miserable and this has made me 100% better!!
  • I use a nasal spray called nasonex, it's the only one that seems to help at all. ( not sure if it's available over there).
  • I second the NeilRinse bottle! I use that every night and then follow it with a nasal spray prescription. It does wonders.
  • I agree- the nasal rinse has been the best relief for me. It works best after a hot shower or bath, that will loosen everything up. I rinse at night and in the Morning.
  • Try cutting dairy out of your diet. You might be lactose intolerant and this will often be what's clogging your airways
  • Benadryl, Zyrtec , Claritin , and sudafed (as long as bp is good) are all safe for pregnancy allergies.
  • My dr also said afrin nose spray is ok at this point.
  • Mine have been horrible too and I usually don't have bad allergies either! Non stop sneezing and blood when j blow my nose for like 6 months straight
  • Our doctor told me I could take Clariton and Zyrtec when mine act up. I've got terrible allergies and she said it was perfectly safe to take.
