Sciatic Nerve Pain

Im 29 weeks. I believe I pinched my sciatic nerve, the worst pain ever.
It seems to get really bad and irritated at work, which i work at a daycare and my classroom is 1 1/2-2 yr olds. Im constantly having to pick them up, bend over, changing diapers, etc.
At some points during the day i cant even walk because it hurts so bad.
Should i call my doctor? Do you know what they will tell me?

Re: Sciatic Nerve Pain

  • Hi
I am in the same position as you. I also work in a daycare my kiddos are birth-18 mos. I have major sciatic pain as well as other issues. Some days I have come home in tears becuase the pain is so unbearable. Right now I Am on a sick leave due to a car accident I was in. But I'm not sure I will be able to return to work with the pain. My
Doctor has been checking on me at each appointment to assess whether or not I can return to work.

I think you should def talk to your doctor about this. I'm in canada so not sure how things work in the states.

  • I've had such horrible sciatic pain for most of my pregnancy! My doctor says the only thing that might help, is to see a chiropractor. He also said regular exercise helps, but I feel like it makes it worse since I do Zumba a few times a week. I'm 33 weeks this Friday, really looking forward to having the baby, and getting some relief from it all. I can't imagine working at a daycare all day with this pain. Almost there mama!
  • Im a hairdresser and standing all day kills me. I have the same pain, I have found heating pad and chiropractor help me! I am currently 31 weeks and I started getting adjusted every two weeks, and at 36 weeks I'll go once a week. Not only does it help with that pain but I have read it can help with delivery if your spine and tailbone are all aligned, and it feels so good!! Warm bath and heating pad!
  • I am in the same boat as well. I have a desk job, and sitting all day is just making it worse! I dread getting up to pee (which happens a lot lol) because the first few steps are always excruciatingly painful. Pain shoots down my leg sometimes, and the rest of the time it just aches! I use a heating pad and massage for the pain. Can't wait til this part is over !!.
  • Chiropractor and heating pad!
  • I had this for two weeks!! I went to a chiropractor, heating pad, ice and yoga
  • Yep I actually had terrible trouble with this even before I got pregnant and now I've been experiencing leg cramps up the wazoo! I'm a server and I'm 28 weeks I couldn't do the physical therapy my doctor wanted me to do so instead my MIL who is a physical therapist gave me this hip belt to help keep everything squeezed together....she explained it because you're muscles and pelvis are loosening so baby will fit when they are born which then causes your piraformis muscle which is in your butt to then squeeze around your sciatic nerve which runs right through it....I found the belt, staying of my feet, warm showers, hour and cold therapy and Tylenol were/are and have been my best solutions.....Good Luck!
  • Sorry hot and cold therapy*
  • I feel for you! I have this same issue and have had it for many many years, but it is worse with pregnancy. I had it so bad with my first son that i couldn't move at all! Everything hurt it! I too worked at a preschool, and i think constant bending down and sitting in tiny chairs made it worse. Ibuprofen helps the most, but we can't take it in pregnancy. Regular strength training in my legs and back has helped me tremedously this pregnancy. When your back and core get weak, thats when the pain will flare up. See if you can get into physical therapy. They can help you find targeted exercises to strengthen your lower back. Then do regular stretching. I put my leg up on a higher counter and slightly lean forward to stretch my lower back and butt. Rotating heat and ice will sometimes help me. But try to keep that area strong. Thats your best bet. Good luck to you!!!
  • I haven't had any sciatica during my pregnancy however I had a major issue about 2 years ago all the doctors said there isn't anything to help sciatica however they are wrong. I went to a chiropractor but not a normal Crack your back chiropractor she is more of a naturalist and incorporated acupuncture techniques in her everyday trainings. She would barely touch me but the relief I felt was amazing. She says he trains your body to heal itself. I have even taken my 16 yr old there for sports injuries. It's fantastic. Do some research on it and see what u come up with. We live in new jersey not sure where u live but see what's out there
  • Chiropractor for sure!! I've been seeing one for my sciatica. They will give you different stretches/exercises to do. Also, icing helps tremendously!
  • Mine said "take a paracetamol and if it gets too bad then I'll send you to the physio". The NHS doesn't like to waste money on mere sciatic nerve pain >.<

I'm a classroom teacher and I find alternating between sitting and standing the best solution but it's not easy!
  • A chiropractor helps! Mine taught me a stretch that really helps me! I start by taking either a hot shower or bath and then when you get out immediately sit down on a chair and cross your right leg over your left knee and press down and lean forward onto your right knee that is up.. You'll feel the stretch in your butt. Do it for 20 second intervals right after applying heat. It's kind of painful at first but it helped me! I have to do it a few times a day to keep the pain away but it's worth it.
