horrible gas pains...

Is it just me or is anyone else having horrible gas pains. I wake up in the middle of the night every night in pain and the only thing that helps it go away is going to the bathroom...if I can. Or laying in the fetal position. Anyone else have the same problems or any remedies?! TIA

Re: horrible gas pains...

  • I made the mistake of eating a lot of celery one day which resulted in terrible pain that woke me up at night. I woke up another night cuz I ate too much for dinner and had major gas. I wish I had a solution! I think smaller meals and eating more slowly would help.

  • U can take tums
  • I have this problem too and it seems like nomatter how i change my eating its still painful...i worry something is wrong
  • @nsaid4u thats exactly how I feel. I called the Dr today. They said they don't recommend taking ANY medications this early along and that they font have any openings before my scheduled appointment which is for march 26
  • Sorry to hear that @OCmomma18, but I am right there suffering with you. However, my OB/GYN gave me a sheet of OTC medicines for common ailments that are safe for pregnant women. On it are Gas-X, Maalox or Mylanta chewables (or the generic) as well as Mylanta and Maalox liquid, both up to maximum strength. Of course, I don't know how far along you are, but I am 10 weeks. Maybe try peppermint or ginger tea until you get the OK for meds from your doc.
  • Yesss!! I have woken up several nights in pain. I'm just glad nobody's awake when it comes out! :))
  • @LATXwoman yea, i saw those lists online as well but was very skeptical about taking them before I got the "ok" from the dr. I am only 6wks3days and haven't yet even seen the Dr which is also why i think they said that they don't recommend any medications.

On a side note however, since I have been having such a horrible time sleeping I have spent a lot of time this afternoon researching what could help. I found that Iron can cause constipation. So I looked at my prenatal and saw that there was 28mg of iron in the pills i began taking once i found out i was Pregnant. I am thinking and hoping that this may be the issue because I had been taking another form of prenatals before i found out i was pregnant (to help with conception and since its supposed to be good :) ) that contain no iron! So starting tomorrow I am going to go back to taking those and see what happens, I also brought some Prune juice....I am willing to try anything at this point! LOL!
  • Oh, my prenatals have iron too, so that's good to know! Good luck with the prune juice. Even though I saw my doctor when I was maybe 6ish weeks preggo, she didn't give me this sheet of medications until today, and previously when I had asked about heartburn (I got it all in terms of symptoms!) she did not recommend meds, so I'm sure it's smart to wait. But just know that medical relief is just around the corner if the vitamin-switching and prune juice don't work.
  • Yea, most prenatals do. And I feel like it may be bad for the baby if I don't have enough iron, but I'm in such pain at the moment I feel like I need a little relief. I am a meat eater so I am hoping I have enough iron through diet! :/ cause I can't tolerate this! Lol.

Maybe once my hormones even out I'll be able to go back to the other pills and be okay. But I can imagine the cramping, gas and pain I've had has been good for the baby either. So maybe this is the lesser of the two evils :/
  • I've been having this problem so badly lately, it's sickening! I was at Walmart the other day and could hardly stand up they hurt so badly. I'm trying to stay away from dairy to help this problem but it's hard since I love cheese.  :-<
  • I have been having this issue too. It is SO painful! I have noticed that for me it is much worse if I have had a lot of dairy that day. I'm cutting back where I can, but it's really difficult.

  • Oh my gosh, me too! I wake up almost every night with a tummy ache and it's either gas or number two! I thought it could maybe be my iron supplement. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
  • @rhiannonbaca that's exactly what I think my problem is. I took a different prenatal today so I'm crossing my fingers for a good night
  • @OCmomma18 let me know if you notice a difference!
  • @rhiannonbaca So i have been drinking about 4-6oz of prune juice each night before bed for the past three days and i switched my prenatal to one without iron and i would have to say it is helping a little bit. the first night was better and i didnt really wake up with  cramps that were too bad then the second day i woke up in the middle of the night with mild {mild in comparisson to what they have been} cramps. and last night i didnt wake up with cramps until my alarm went off for  work.
  • I've spent the last four days hunched over in pain, it seems like anytime I eat any carbs I'm just miserable. I've been eating a cup of blueberries every day along with apples and other high fiber fruits to keep me from getting constipated and that's working because I'm going regularly but I'm still having severe gas pains that interfere with my daily life. Just picked up some Maalox and I'm hoping it gives me some relief because I'm losing my mind

Water usually helps me. Or constantly switching positions. I'm 18w today and I have stopped being any amount of shy around DH.
  • So, we need the extra iron in prenatal vitamins because our blood volume will be 140-200% of what it was pre pregnacy by the time we are finished. We need good iron rich blood in high quantities to keep baby healthy.
Having said that drinking lots of water, not drinking from a straw, and eating lots of small meals is helpful. Also, many people have trigger foods. I can't eat broccoli or I'm crying in pain. Get as much fiber and water as you possibly can.
Also, if you lay with your shoulders down on the bed or a mat and bring your knees in and point your but to the sky it can help the gas come out.
I see that this is an older thread, but as it has some new activity i decided to share.

This sounds a little ridiculous, but here's a trick my mom told me about that someone told her to do when she had this problem when she was pregnant: take a slow walk around your house and every few steps stop and do squat in place. Kinda gets things moving I guess - and I swear it works! If nothing else you can give those leg muscles a workout :)

    Feel better ladies!

There are several yoga positions you can do to help (If you don't want to take gas-x). For me, downward dog always helps. You can also do some pelvic rocking (which is good during pregnancy anyway). Just google yoga positions to help with gas and lots will come up.
