How can you tell

I'm a little over 18 weeks and for the last few days I swear I've felt the baby kick a few times when I'm laying still in bed. I'm thinking there kicks but curious if they could possibly be something else. Everyone says it'll feel like fluttering but to me I just feel little kicks. How can I tell a difference?

Re: How can you tell

  • To clarify, it will still be a while yet before you can feel the baby move from the outside. So the movement you can feel at this point is baby kicking, arm waving, bouncing etc. Since the baby is so small this translates into a fluttering feeling. To me, the best way I could describe early movement is like fish swimming in a fishbowl. Like if you have ever been snorkeling and have felt fish swim close by. You might just be feeling gas, or ligaments stretching. Or who knows, maybe it's kicks. Sooner than later you will be very familiar with what movement feels like and will be able to tell the difference.

  • This is my second pregnancy, and I'm still not sure if what I feel is baby sometimes. Although, sometimes I feel bubbles and realize they are too high, so it must be digestion. Location can be a good indicator. Its unlikely that baby is quite to your belly button, but other organs have been push upward some. Soon it will be unmistakable!
  • I thought I felt baby kick a couple weeks ago, but now I'm sure it was just round ligaments. :( Felt jab-like. But that was at week 13 or 14, so your experience is a lot more likely to be baby kicks than mine was. :)
  • Two days ago, I was sitting still on the couch and I swear I felt one little poke. It felt like a muscle low in my abdomen twitched, but it was only once (I think twitching muscles usually twitch more than once?). I'm SO glad to hear PP say that sometimes early movement can feel similar to the swishing you feel when a fish swims really close to you or something - I know I've felt that a little bit when I'm being still. Doesn't feel super concrete and I know it's not feeling the actual movements but I feel more excited/a little more validated from her having said that! =]
