I've said this a billion times but I will keep saying it...get a Snoogle pregnancy pillow! It is the best thing ever! It wraps completely around your body providing tons of support (legs, back, belly). Plus if you accident roll on to your back you are actually propped up by the pillow and therefore not completely flat on your back but rather half way between your side and your back. I had the same problem with DD until I got the pillow, now I don't stress if I wake up on my back because I know I am not completely flat.
If you don't want to get the pillow (they can be a little pricey but in MHO totally worth it) just put a pillow behind your back to do the same thing.
We are not really far enough along for this to be an issue yet. You lay on your back at every OB appt so doing it for a little while won't hurt anything. It compresses the vena Cava and reduced blood flow back to the heart and to the baby. You might get dizzy or lightheaded and this is what's waking you up. Use a pillow if it makes you nervous. You have to be extremely flat for this to happen. So pillow or bunch some blanket up under your back

this. your body is going to wake you up if you're losing circulation, and it's likely that you haven't even been on your back for very long by the time you wake up. i second PPs suggestion of getting a Snoogle or other pregnancy pillow - even if you start to roll onto your back it will keep you on an incline and reduce the risk of this happening. before i had mine i would wake up after rolling onto my back because my leg would start to go numb, but now that's not an issue at all.
I am having twin so I have been worried about this for a while since I have double baby and placenta weighing down. I have had a snoogle since 12 weeks. Sometimes I find it keeps me propped up a little but not always. I still wake up multiple times a night completely flat on my back. My doctor said as long as I am going to sleep on my side and am moving to my side when I wake up it is fine. She said the reason you wake up on your back so much is because you body is letting you know you have been on your back long enough. Also, you will be affected way before baby so if you are fine baby is fine!
I'm having the same issue. I got the snuggie but I somehow manage to wake up flat on top of it. Doctor told me not to worry as my body will wake me up and just readjust. I miss sleeping in my stomach!
Like the PP my midwife told me that you can't control your movements when you sleep so there is always the chance you will roll to your back. Your body will wake yourself up to move so there is no need to worry when you wake up laying flat. If you are worried either get a pregnancy pillow, or place a pillow on your back side when you're laying on your side. This will hopefully at least keep you propped up if you do roll

Am I the only one who didn't like this pillow?! Seriously, I bought it with my second and donated it even though we planned to have another, guess it's not for everyone!

Aw what a bummer! I know there are other pregnancy pillows out there so obviously people have different preferences and/or needs.
I am only a back sleeper when pregnant. Like I won't lay on my back trying to sleep, but constantly wake up on my back. I use a body pillow tho, my nurse suggested it with my second. Because I was hospitalized and they had monitors on me and her all night and whenever either of our hearts would drop or raise they were coming in. After a few times of telling me to roll over she just started bringing in pillows lol. Now if I don't have a pillow behind me I wake up with my arms asleep because sure enough im on my back. Ugh!
