April 2015 Moms

Are there any older mums out there?

I'm 41 and this pregnancy was something of a surprise/shock as my husband was snipped a decade ago (and yes I have been a good girl!). I have wanted to go to antenatal classes but feel very conscious of my age! I would love to hear from other older mums-to-be!

Re: Are there any older mums out there?

  • I just turned 40, so there are a few of us here. Try the pregnant over 35 board and you'll find lots of company!

  • I am 39. Don't feel self conscious about the other ladies at the prenatal classes- our group ranges from 21 to 44 years (all first babies). Age is irrelevant, we pretty much all have the same questions and concerns.
  • Does 33 classify me as older? I feel like it kind of does on this board since there seem to be quite a few teenagers.

I have many mom friends who didn't have their first until 40+ and all of them are fabulous! I think you should take the class and not worry about what others may think.  I bet you'll be surprised that you aren't the only AMA mom there.  People are waiting a lot longer these days to start families.
  • No advice, but this post terrifies me! This is my third and I'm trying to convince my husband to get a vasectomy after we have the baby. If it were to fail I think I would go crazy! Good luck to you!

  • I wouldn't even consider you guys older mamas!
I work at a hospital in California, and our average age for first time mom is 37. I have had a FTM of 55 before. I think it depends a lot in where you live on what is the social norm- even though after 35 you are considered AMA by your OB and have some increased health risks.
    Congratulations mamas! And be proud!!

Thanks u guys, I feel better now
  • I am 39, so definitely not one of the younger parents here. This is our second baby. First was born when I was 37. We did not wait by any means, but had lots of trouble. Multiple rounds of IVF. Wish we could have been younger parents, but at this point I am just grateful that I get to be a mom.

    Baby boy Henry born 2015.

  • I'm 42, 2nd baby. Our 1st will be 12 Next month. Ours was a huge surprise blessing also!
I don't feel over 40....but I was sick up until recently - heartburn, acid reflux, horrible constipation. I think my 1st pregnancy was easier.
  • I'm 40 and expecting #2 and #3 (twins). I was 38 with our first and took every class available. There were definitely lots of younger couples in those classes, but we were surprised by the number of older couples as well.
  • I am 36, but at my last OB appt he made the comment that some days all his patients are in their 40s. I think it is more common now a days
  • I'm 41 and having my first in less than a month. Don't feel self conscious taking the class and good luck!
  • I'm 35, You should check the Pregnant over 35 board, they focus on a lot of the aspects of being an older mom.

  • I'm 40, no matter what there always seems to be a wide range of ages in those classes. Do What You Need To do. ☺
