Meals to take to new Mothers

I'm looking for ideas on what to bring my friend for dinner. She had a baby last week. I know that she eats really healthy.

When I had my twins, I had some neighbors being meals. One meal I became really sick, one was a take home pizza from Wal Mart and another came on dirty dishes. Nothing was really appetizing after just having a c-section.

I was thinking of doing chicken fajitas or a Costco Rotisserie chicken with a salad.

Suggestions?

  • Both sound great. My go to is usually a homemade lasagna. If I were making it for one if my more health conscious friends/family I would sub in a homemade veggie lasagna (with eggplant, zucchini and whole wheat noodles). I make a mean lasagna.

  • I always make chicken casserole.  You can add some more veggies in to make it extra healthy.  It's the one with chicken and stuffing.  I make a salad too.

Feel like sharing your recipe? :) I've yet to find one that my hubby approves!

I've taken a fajita meal from Rosa's before. Easy on me and always a hit!
  • I found this on Pinterest yesterday. I plan to start prepping them for myself, but I'm sure they'd be appreciated as meals to receive post pregnancy, especially since you could give her one for now and one for a later date when she doesn't have someone dropping off food. Not all of these are super healthy, but they seemed to me like foods that most people would generally like.

  • Thanks! I'm going to look at those recipes for myself too!

I have Celiac and really sensitive. My sons also have lots of allergies (soy, legumes, nuts, eggs, dairy). I think this time around I will kindly decline meals. It's so hard to keep things gluten and allergy free. I don't want to worry about recovery and getting a gluten reaction. I'll probably let my Mom make me stuff though since she also has Celiac, and she is really educated about my kids allergies. My inlaws always worry me though. For instance, my FIL will ask "Can S have almond milk"...um no.

I'm thinking of doing lots of grilled chicken and freezing it.  That way I can just add to tacos or salads.
  • You could do a lasagna with brown rice noodles instead? Or homemade soup? Like carrot, parsnip and ginger purée- That's my latest soup I've been making and it's very filling and healthy. Even a big fruit salad is a good idea. I'm hungry now.
  • I just talked to two other friends that are bringing her meals and they are doing lasagna and chicken/broccoli casserole. I may stick to soup. She might want something lighter after several days of casseroles.
  • Definitely something that tastes good as seconds, or thirds! Reheating leftovers is key :D

  • A nice chicken tortilla soup is always good. Chicken, veggies like corn and tomatoes and bell peppers, it's flavorful, maybe a little bit of kick. Reheats well, and she can add tortilla chips to thicken it up if she wants.

That's actually what I decided to bring her.
  • I just was talking with a friend about this; she's due in a month and wanted some freezer ideas and this is what we came up with
(Not all are super super healthy)

    Regular or veggie lasagna
    Chicken tortilla soup
    Gumbo
    Chili
    Meat sauce and pasta
    Enchiladas
    Stuffed peppers
Roast and veggies (just toss in crockpot kind of meal)
    Tomato rice soup
Any kind of stew for the crockpot

  • I really welcomed cold cuts and fresh rolls from the deli... Especially after 9 months of cold cut deprivation!
