GD Weekly Check-in

Anyone who has been diagnosed with GD introduce yourself and post questions! I'll add different questions each week if I can be creative.

Also, if you want the check in on a different day of the week, let me know!

Re: GD Weekly Check-in

  • I'm Alison. This is my 2nd pregnancy with GD. This time I was diagnosed at 16 weeks so I realized this week that I've now past my half way point of this! That gave me some hope! :)

I'm having another boy, due May 8. My doctor already said I will not be going past my due date.

  • Hi, I'm Kristin and a FTM due May 7. I found out last Thursday that I have GD. This week I was supposed to have gotten a call to set up my appointment with the diabetes class or whatever it is. Never got that call, so now I'm really getting frustrated. I've been watching my carbs and what I eat but have the additional worry of whether I'm doing enough now. I just want my baby girl to continue to be healthy. I'm going to call my dr Monday to find out what the holdup is or who I can contact about it.
  • Hi ladies, I'm Jessica. I'm a FTM and was diagnosed with GD a couple of weeks ago. I had absolutely no guidance when they told me and they said just wait and I'll be called by the diabetes clinic. I was finally called and now I'm scheduled on Thursday to meet with them and find out what needs to be done. They didn't rush to get me an appointment and I've made no diet changes, so I'll see what happens on Thursday.

I love the idea of the check in for GD! Good luck to you ladies at your appointment.

  • I'm Erin. I'm a FTM. Due May 8 with a girl :) Diagnosed last week. I meet with dietician and get my blood glucose testing supplies Monday.
  • Hi STM with GD and this time has been awful. I am on an insane amount of insulin which I keep having to increase every few weeks. I think a lot has to do with my age. Last time I was able to control by diet. It's been exhausting and emotionally draining. :-(
  • I'll chime in too. I'm a STM and found out I have GD (didn't have it with #1). I had to go to a class a few weeks ago to learn about it and how to test blood sugars as well as meet with a nutritionist. So far I've been able to keep my blood sugar levels under control with dietary changes but it hasn't been super easy. Its nice to have others to chat with who are going through the same thing.

I have to say I've been irritated reading all the comments on other threads about women who are trying to figure out how to "pass" the test by changing their diet dramatically or fasting when they aren't supposed to. I know the diagnosis isn't desired but its best to know you have it and take care of it. Sometimes you can do everything right and still have it. I'm glad I know I have it so I can take care of myself & my baby.

  • I was borderline - clocked in at 133 at the one hour test, and my hospital's cutoff is 140 (although it used to be 130). My OB just said to avoid processed sugar.  I am glad my number wasn't higher but wouldn't be surprised if it went over 141 on a different morning.

If you don't mind, I might lurk on your check-ins.
  • I'd love to join the conversation. I don't have gd but instead of doing the test I choose to do finger pokes and they have shown I am insulin resistant. I am changing my diet and excerise and testing all day. I find it hard. This needs to be a life long change for me. I'm scared to get diabetes my Dr isn't to concerned about my numbers (just my morning fasting number is a little high but the diabetic nurse keeps scaring my to death) I'm eating little to no carbs (or as little as possible) and no added sweets or sugar it's not easy to stick too. But I'm doing my best. Oh and my due date is May 7 third baby I have a boy 8 in May and girl 4 in May. So far I have gained 5 pounds this pregnancy.
  • @vball78. ..I totally agree. There was also a comment that one of their friends ate too much chocolate cake and cookies and developed GD. That's not how it works!

Hi everyone. I'm a FTM due May 12. I was diagnosed with GD last Tuesday. I went in and saw the nutritionist on Thursday and have been testing myself 3-4 times a day and keeping my food log. It hasn't been so bad. My numbers have been mostly on track. I mostly eat a high protein diet anyway--I think GD may have been inevitable for me because my dad has Type 2 and it's likely that my mom had GD, although at that time they did not test for it.

In any case, all sonograms so far have shown that baby is fine and she's the right size for where she should be. The biggest concern with GD right now is that she'll start storing carbs and get bigger than she should. I'd like to go full term so testing myself and managing my carb intake seems like small things to do for that trade-off.

I was really worried about having to test myself--I'm afraid of needles--but it really is nothing! It's more of a nuisance to remember that I have to do it so I've started putting reminders on my calendar.

ETA: Thanks for starting this thread!!
  • Hi everyone! STM here kiddo due May 15. I was diagnosed with borderline GD last week, missed it by a point. Oh well, I saw a nutritionalist on Wednesday, so I've been pricking my finger for three days. All the numbers have been coming out pretty normal, so I suppose this will be fixable by diet changes, which is great. My little boy is looking normal size, I will keep poking my fingers and eating healthier for this kiddo. Not too long left ladies.
  • For those who have been testing for the last couple days with finger pokes. Do you mind me asking what your numbers are? Or what you were told to stay below?

I was told my fasting should be below 95. Two hours after meals should be below 120.  Since I've been diagnosed my fasting numbers have been between 85-93. I've only had a couple of high numbers after meals. GD is progressive though, so the further along the harder it can be for some to control it through diet alone. Good luck!
  • I hope I don't get GB, but I'm worried I am. On Thursday I went for my checkup and had the one hour test. I was 27 weeks but baby measured large which is 31 weeks. Doctor didn't seem concern and didn't tell me to diet or anything. I started with normal weight 110lbs and I am 4'11 so i gained about 20 lbs which isn't too bad to me. However, on Friday I got a call from their office and I missed it, they left a vm to call back on Monday. I tried calling back but they were already closed for the day. I'm so worry that I got a call because they say no call is good, call is when something wrong. I'm so freaked out about this while GB thing since I hate needles and I don't want to prick my finger everyday:(. I hope baby is ok.

I was told the same thing. But apparently my MFM office is more conservative and said fasting number should be below 90. I get frustrated when my number is between 90-95.

  • I was told to keep fasting numbers below 95. I'm also supposed to check 1 hour after each meal and that should be under 130.

  • For me fasting should be under 90. One hour after meals should be less than 140 and two hours after should be less than 120. I'm testing on the two hour mark. So far I had one "fail" day but I'm pretty sure I know why (high stress day and LOTS of carbs as a result).

The most important thing I was told is that I still need to eat. (I guess some people get so freaked out, they cut back too much.) And if I really want something on the "meh" list, I can have it just in moderation. And I should try to offset it with some physical activity.
  • Feeling bad right now. I have been doing really well but tonight for dinner I thought one meal of homemade waffles with syrup would be okay just once because that's what my kids wanted for dinner. Yeah not so smart I spiked just under the acceptable limit. I have been good for the last week keeping it so low and I just hope it doesn't cause I downhill spiral. Just wanted to share. Hope everyone is have a good night.
  • Did everyone do the 3 hour test after failing the 1 hour? I spoke with the nurse today and I failed the 1 hour so I'm waiting for the doctor to call me. The nurse said the doctor may have me do the 3 hour or have me sign up for the diabetes class right away. How high does your sugar level have to do to automatically be classified as GD after the 1 hour test?
  • I thought everyone has to do the three hour one. Except, they will take your fasting blood sugar level in the morning before the 3 hour test, if you reading is higher than 94 you will be diagnosed with gd without having the do the 3 hours test.
  • Hi, momma of soon to be 3... 19 yrs, 14 yrs and due May 25th. Didn't have GD with the first 2(actually had hypoglycemia), but older now do maybe that's why...was diagnosed today. Took a 1 hour at 14 weeks passed, took another 1 hr a week ago and barely failed, took my 3 hour on Friday... fasting was 101, but the 3 hour mark I was 77, began shaking after I left the lab... waiting for the call for the classes, hubby is worried, I'm usually an anti sweet person, just not my thing, but this little girl is all sugar... haven't gained a pound yet, actually lost 2.5 last visit, but was overweight to start and got a more active job same week found put I was pregger... want to go full term and not be induced..thanks for starting this thread..I was hoping to see something
  • I did not do a 3 hour test. I was allowed just to check my sugar levels 4 times a day on my own after failing the 1 hour. This is my second time having it so I am sure that's why.
