Pediatrician Question

I've spent the past couple of weeks narrowing down pediatricians. I've called a couple of practices to ask what needs to be done at this point in the pregnancy. They all basically said just let the hospital know the name of the doctor you choose .. I feel like i should at least get to know this person first. Does anyone regret not meeting their ped first or should i just go with someone and hope for the best? Do people really go and interview docs ? I just choose someone in my network that is reasonably close to my home that has extended and weekend hours. The practice is a good one but has about five doctors within the practice and i randomly picked a name out of those five.

Re: Pediatrician Question

  • I usually go off a recommendation. For DD1 my sister recommended her peds doctor. And I was able to do a consult first. We had to move to another state and now using the recommendation from the OB office. Hoping to do the consult before again.

  • Ugh I need to do this. Doubtful that I will have the time or energy to interview though!

  • Yes - it's a great idea to interview if you have the time. It's pretty reassuring on your end. (I ended up doing interviews because I was new to the area and didn't have any recommendations).  The pediatrician we chose for our son did meet and greets between 8 and 9 a.m. in the mornings and we scheduled a quick visit to meet. He went over the run down of what happens after baby's born, too, such as what he'll do during the checkup at the hospital and how you'll come in for a check-up the day after baby comes home from hospital, etc. etc.

We didn't do interviews, went off of recommendations of friends who are doctors and have kids. Hasn't steered us wrong.

  • My pedi has a new parent night once a month. You get to see the office, meet the dr and a few of the nurses and tour the office. I thought it was great of her to do this...it doesn't seem that many do.
  • Yes, I planned to interview with my first but when we called the first one that we planned to interview, they said what yours did. We had friends that went there so I was almost sure we'd stick with them anyway, but I was irritated they weren't willing to do a meet and greet/interview/etc. But life was moving quickly and we never did anything about it.

Turns out- i LOVE the pedi. Weird thing about pediatrician: You will not see the doctor you choose regularly. When baby is first discharged from hospital, they want him/her back to the office after 2 days then again a week later. Then at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, etc. So the first appointments when you're first discharged- it's possible you'll see the dr you select, but also- if they're not in the office that day, they'll just send you to a different doctor. Then for all those well visits, you can usually see the doc you want. BUT- you will likely be at their office a lot in between all those. For baby's first cold, cough, etc. I know for us we have probably seen the pedi for "sick" visits 8 times in the first year. Plus the 6 well visits. So we ended up just getting to know all the doctors. We know theres one we don't like and do our best to avoid her, but all the others are great and actually we switched our "primary" doctor from who was recommended to us to another dr in the practice just bc after seeing her we realized she was much more in line with our parenting style.

So this practice might just work beautifully for you. It's hard to find time to interview pediatrician's bc kids are always sick, so they're always getting tossed last minute patients. And who gets the preference, the sick kid or the new mom wanting to interview them? Yknow? It stinks, I understand feeling uncomfortable. You can do interviews at other places if you still feel nervous, but having 5 doctors in one practice sounds pretty great to me. Good luck!
  • I'm in the exact same position as you. I found a great practice based on reviews, hours, and the fact that they come to my hospital but can't meet anyone until day of delivery and even then it's who is on call not necessarily the name I picked. They don't do interviews so I'm stuck to. I'm just going to hope for the best and trust the process. But it does make me nervous.
  • I went off of recommendation too but most doctors now a days don't meet or do interviews. And at our hospital whatever doctor is on call will be the one to see your baby then they ask what pediatrician you want to check the baby before you leave.
