Constipated? Try this.

Like most of you, I have been experiencing the glorious side effect of pregnancy, constipation. I hate the idea of stool softeners and I can't stomach prunes so I sought out a natural solution.

I remember my colonics girl recommending magnesium supplements to me to help get things moving so I decided to give it a try.

I took one 200 mg pill last night with a big glass of water and woke up this morning with fantastic relief. It also helps reduce stress and regulate your nervous system.

I asked my doctor last week if it was safe and she said absolutely.

Just thought I would throw this out there as an alternative for stool softeners.

Re: Constipated? Try this.

  • Oh!! I have some magnesium citrate actually.. I bought it accidentally looking to make magnesium oil, so I am going to try this!!
  • Loading the player...
  • Also I have heard a teaspoon of coconut oil helps too.
  • Thanks for the tip @Knottie62159488
will definitely going to try them. Had constipation a couple of days now. Forgot how painful and frustrating it is!
  • I was getting desperate!! I was going on day 3 of not going, sorry for the tmi but I was having horrible stomach pains and I was so uncomfortable.

I will be using magnesium any day that I can't go. I feel 1000% times better today. Ha! It's the little things in life.
  • Thanks for the tip. Constipation has been by nemesis for a while now! I tried milk of magnesia a few weeks ago, but that made me so sick to my stomach it wasn't pleasant at all.
  • I struggled SO bad with constipation. I tried literally everything and just suffered everyday-- honestly I cried about it. However, I'm 15 weeks now and it's so so so much better! Almost back to normal- I hope that's what it is for you too! Hang in there!

Also apple a day keeps the doctor away and your pipes running.
But I do agree on magnesium doing wonders! Uuuuhmmmmm
  • Thank you for the advice! Definitely going to try this!
  • So funny I do eat an apple a day. It's one of the few fruits that I want everyday. But so far it hasn't helped my pipes like i would have wanted it to!
  • Thank u so much I can't do an apple right now so I do applesauce also a packet of variety oatmeal is good too Hang in there ladies
  • a midwife suggested psyllium husk pills to me. I haven't tried it yet, but she said they're safe and worked for her during pregnancy.
  • I second the magnesium! Have been drinking a calcium magnesium drink (powder from Whole Foods) and it works like a charm. And good for you too! Oh and it also helps with muscle cramps. :)
  • Thanks for this tip, I am definitely going to try this! Nothing is helping me stay regular lately!

Yes I take the psyllium capsules as well, my DH drinks the powder but I gag when I try.

But with psyllium when you are already blocked up it can make it worse by drying out your stool if you don't drink enough water. But as long as you are hydrated they are an awesome source of extra fiber!!

I took magnesium before being pregnant as a supplement for restless legs (who knows? Dr said to) but didn't tell me to ease into the dose. I took 500mg per her recommendation and it emptied my entire system lol painfully

Start with a small dose - see how it works for you and then increase and avoid the painful and unpleasant situation of you take too much lol

Hope that helps ... I know I wasn't pregnant when it happened but still :)

It also works for restless legs!!!!!? You just blew my mind.

As for the apple... It helps my mother....... o_O

Thank you! I put coconut oil in my smoothie this morning and it worked!!
  • Just throwing it out there. Going on day two of taking magnesium at night and I swear I look 5 pounds thinner today. I've been regular the past two days and what a difference it makes in your belly!

  • Is this something you take daily? Or as needed?
  • girl you're my angel, you're my darling angel! lol

    so trying this.
  • They do have a powder version? I bought the pill version and I couldn't stomach swallowing it.
  • @romeror6198 you just take it as needed. It took it two days in a row and it made me regular for the next 4 days. I haven't needed it again since. I think just take at night if you felt constipated that day.

@lolad5 they do have a powder version. In fact my colonics lady told me to get the powder and drink it at night in a big glass of water. I just got the pills because I do better with swallowing pills. But both should work just fine.
  • Magnesium or magnesium citrate?
  • Is the magnesium supplement something that can bought over the counter? What brand do you all use?
Thanks for the tip! Much needed!
  • Omg thank you so much! Who would of thought that going to the bathrom would make my day. Knottie62159488 you are awesome for sharing this tip!
  • Does anyone know what the diff between magnesium citrate & magnesium HCI is?

  • I got mine at whole foods it's magnesium citrate. You can also buy the powder and mix it with your water at night. @Jeanne & Dustin , @mommalovesidxl

And as with anything ask your doctor if you aren't sure. Mine said it was totally fine for me but I'm not a doctor so I can't say it's fine for everyone.

If you google about taking magnesium for constipation there is a lot of great information explaining the different types of magnesium supplements and names. I've gathered they are all pretty much the same except for milk of magnesium which is not recommended to take. @Melzig76

I hate that I couldn't change my username
  • Gotta get me some. Can't be doing with this, pretty uncomfortable to say the least !

    Thanks for for sharing!

  • Raisin Bran for breakfast every morning really helps me. Magnesium is awesome, too.
  • For everyone asking about other magnesium uses, topical magnesium is super helpful in relaxing muscles (part of the restless leg bit), easing morning sickness, and Helping you fall asleep! I love it and use it every night

I'm sure this will come in handy later in our pregnancies to help with sore backs and hips! I'm going to pick some up next time I'm at whole foods!
  • I used to be able to just look at my coffee and it made me go. hahaha. I just downed my half calf cup...waiting to see if it works because our local supermarket is closed today. thanks for the tip!

  • I try having high fibre foods in the morning at lunch. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt :)
  • hehe well that was fast...coffee worked of me today but question...My husband has "Phillips milk of magnesia" ...is this okay for pregnant ladies? I had no idea it was for constipation...I thought it was for diarrhea...I never had problems like this before so I'm clueless and we don't discuss our bowel movements hahah.  I would totally borrow some of this though if it's okay next time I'm desperate...

  • @caityrose stay away from milk of magnesia!

I'm the same way some days I just need a small cup of coffee and I'm all set.

Magnesium capsules or powder are good to have on hand because not only will they help you go, they also help with stress, muscle cramps and pains, and you can use it as an antacid for heartburn.
