sudden chest pain, shortness of breath

I'm a little over 30 weeks pregnant. Several months ago I had a small electric shock in my chest and for about 10 seconds I couldn't breathe and thought I was going to pass out. It had only happened once and I only felt bad for about 30 seconds. It happened again today. I read that heart palpitations are common during pregnancy but I wasn't sure if this was what they feel like or not. Has anyone else had anything similar?  I go to the doctor again on Monday and plan to ask about it but I'm wondering if maybe I should be more concerned and go in sooner?

Palpitations feel like your heart skips a beat or throws an extra beat in there. I was diagnosed with PVC in January where this happens occasionally. It never hurt, just felt off.

I would definitely tell your doctor. Your heart is nothing to mess around with.

Also, do you think it could be related to anxiety? What you describe is similar to anxiety symptoms I had years ago when trying to plan my gigantic, multi-cultural wedding by my self.

  • I thought it might be anxiety too. I've been taking buspar throughout my pregnancy. It just seemed odd that it was so sudden then went away just as quickly.
  • I have about 1,000 PVCs/palpitations daily and they feel like PP said, like a skipped heartbeat or flutter in your chest. I can say that if you are getting short of breath with it get checked ASAP...if this is a true heart issue, whether structural or electrical, and you're not pumping blood adequately then baby isn't getting the right amount of oxygenated blood which isn't good...it's better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your heart...it might just be something as simple as anxiety...but get checked out to be safe...

Go to see a doctor ASAP. Have you had your blood pressure checked recently?
  • I'll be 31 weeks tomorrow and this past weekend I had a "heavy" chest and short of breath. I phoned my pedi nurse friend who suggested I sit up and take deep breaths for a while. She said it may be baby crowding up there. This helped me but I plan on mentioning it to Dr. On Wednesday at next appointment.
  • I just had my blood pressure checked last week and it was normal. I'm going to the doctor every 2 weeks now. I go back again next Monday.
  • Tell your Dr. as soon as possible. I once suffered a pulmonary embolism. It felt very similar to what you are describing. Being pregnant puts your blood in a hypercoagultive state, which is why pregnant women with a history of clotting, take Lovenox, an anti-coagulant. If a blood clot travels to your lung, it causes an embolism which coud be extremely serious. I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but I wouldn't wait for it to happen again.
