2nd Trimester

In pain and tylenol isn't working!!

I am 16 weeks and I have an infection in my tooth and I am in serious pain! I wake up in the middle of the night and can't eat comfortably. I have been taking tylenol extra strength but it wares off pretty quick, so I'm left in pain. Is there anything else I can take that is safe during pregnancy? Please help!

  • I had an Er trip last week due to a kidney stone (16 weeks pregnant) and they prescribed Lortab. I was really scared to take it but my ob insisted that the risk was minimal and the severe pain would be worse for the baby. Maybe you should see a dentist and consult with your ob about what you may be able to take to help with pain.

I know that clove can be a natural relief for tooth pain. Maybe in the meantime buy some clove at the grocery store and put it close to the infected tooth. Fx you feel better soon.
  • There are meds you can take when pregnant, but you need to see your dentist/OB to get a recommendation and possible prescription for an appropriate one. Please don't take advice from internet strangers on pain medication during your pregnancy. You can do a lot of damage to your baby by following bad advice.
  • Most doctors will prescribe opiates for severe pain during pregnancy. Tooth pain is the worst. I bet your dentist can prescribe some tylenol 3 or something to get you through it. Are you on any antibiotics for the infection? You should seriously see a dentist if you haven't already. Tooth infections are no joke.
  • There are definitely stronger pain meds you can take during pregnancy. You will need a prescription but I would see your dentist asap- a tooth infection during pregnancy could easily turn into something very serious. Dental health during pregnancy is far more important than a lot of people realize.

  • My doc perscribed addasol 30s for cyst pain and said it was perfectly safe to take. I never took em bc im not one that takes pain meds
    For much .
However if I had a tooth infection I probAbly would have (tooth infections are the worst). You should see your dentist so you can get some
antobiotics . Once the infection is gone, your pain should get better. Due to pregnancy, there's not much more they can do beyond that until after you give birth .
My SIL broke her tooth while pregnant and was decided she needed a root canal. Unfortunately , she had to wait out the rest of her pregnancy with a broken tooth before she could get it fixed.

    Hope you feel better soon!

One of my doctors (maternal fetal specialist) told me I can take ibuprofen/motrin/aleve as long as it was as directed and for no more than 3 days in a row, but definitely speak with your doctor as all of them give different answers. I'd also go to the dentist to make sure nothing's seriously wrong.

I have been told ibuprofen is a huge NO during pregnancy. I would do some research before ever taking it pregnant.
  • I broke my arm and tore my bicep back in December when I was 16 weeks. Tylenol didn't work for me either. They had put me on a narcotic.

You have to see your doctor for a prescription. There is nothing else over the counter you can take that will work, especially for tooth pain.

Tooth pain is the worst pain ever. My brother in law had issues and the poor guy was in agony. Get seen asap and get some relief!
  • I'm a dental assistant, please go see a dentist about this infection. My boss says infection can cause serious problems with the baby and if not treated, can lead to severe sickness! It's ok to have an Xray in your 2nd trimester too and also anesthesia if they have to work on your tooth.
