Re: feeling down

  • Can you get your Dr to write a note to the WIC people to tell them that your weight is not a problem?

Are the WIC people who say you're obease qualified to diagnose you as such? In other words, are they doctors? I don't know anything about WIC but my guess is that they are not. I agree with PP, get a note from your doctor that says your weight gain is normal.
  • I don't really know anything about WIC but I thought it was based solely on financial need and not contingent upon the participant's health. If that's the case, why are they even commenting on your weight? And if that's NOT the case, on what basis are they making this determination? If I were you, I would throw an absolute shit fit ESPECIALLY if their assessment is going in a file and affecting your benefits. At the very least, I agree with PPs that you should obtain a note from your OB establishing that your weight is normal for this stage in pregnancy, that it is not cause for concern, and that you are in good health and DEMAND that this note be included in your file.

You're not alone! I had the same experience at my first WIC appointment & it made me furious! They weighed me and told me I had gained too much weight so far & ever since I've been self conscious. It seemed very inappropriate for a medically unqualified county worker to tell me I had put on too much. I spoke with my OB & she tells me I'm on track & healthy. Politely request at your next meeting that you don't feel comfortable talking about your weight with anyone but your Dr.

I do think it's way out of line.

Just for clarity...your weight should not affect your benefits.

I don't know how WIC handles everything but from what I understood (from my degree in college) was that they were supposed to educate.

Just weighing you, doesn't sound very helpful...

You may actually be able to refuse (politely of course) to be weighed. I don't know if benefits are contingent upon tracking your weight, but I doubt it. It's probably some implemented policy designed to "help" women be educated about their pregnancy. It's historical precedent has to do with women needing government support having low birth weight babies...now it's probably an unintended consequence that it's a tool to shame and admonish moms we should be looking out for.

ETA: I regularly decline to be weighed at doctors offices if I'm not there for something where'd my weight will be relevant...like coming in for an allergy test or for flu/cold symptoms. Obv, right now my OB does weigh me. My friends refer to the scale as a "self esteem elevator", and I find that number which changes daily and naturally to be very triggering and not usually helpful to my overall health goals.

  • Listen to your doc and ignore the rest
  • Wow. I find this weighing in for WIC out of line (btw, DH and I missed the cutoff for WIC by $20 a month. twenty frickin dollars). I would agree to get a note from your dr about your weight being on track, and bring it to them. Ask if your benefits are contingent on your weight. If not, then I would decline. If so, ask if your note from your dr monthly (or every other week, or whatev) will suffice as long as it has your weight and drs recommendation (as in, none, cause you're doing fine) on it.

  • went to doctor today i am weighing so heavy because i am retaining alot of fluid doctor said it happens during pregnancy dont freak out lol
  • How rude. Like everyone else has said, your benefits aren't based on your weight gain and if they had concerns they should just tell you to talk to your dr!

Btw, with my first on WIC every time I went to my appointments with him they told me he was too little and not growing enough but his pediatrician never had any issues with his slow weight gain. Listen to your Drs and don't be too hung up on what the WIC people are saying!
  • I seriously stopped doing wic because they are weight obsessed. I might go back after baby is born.
