Skinny Kids/Picky Eaters

So i have a 6 year old little boy who weighs 40 pounds. I believe he is 44 inches. He has always had a very small appeite. When he was young we had a whole work up done and they told us he just wasnt an eater and eventually he would grow out of it. I started supplementing with pediasure a couple of years ago but he still only gains about one pound a year. Pediatrician is not worried but he's as thin as a rail and its driving me nuts. Anyone else in a similar situation and how do you handle it emotionally?  Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Skinny Kids/Picky Eaters

  • I have noticed when I snack on something, my son gets curious and wants to try it. Sometimes loves it, sometimes not. It's a way to get him interested in trying things though.
He usually always would like dessert so I ask if he wants icecream etc. Always a "yes!" Well then you have to take 3 bites if X or all your dinner etc. I give him the Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt bars (packed with secret protein) and he eats gummy multivitamins. I'm not too worried, I just have to get trickier. Like replacing his jelly in pb&j with all fruit spread and throwing a jar of baby food veggies in the pizza sauce when we make pizza and making secretly healthy desserts and smoothies.

  • Thanks, my son is the same age. How much does your son weigh?
  • My husband took him to his 6yr check up and doesn't recall his stats. It's not on the report from the dr. Either but I wanna say he's 40 lbs and 42" tall but that was prolly a year ago. I guess the dr. wasnt concerned. I'm only 5' and my husband is 5'9" so weight and height is relative. DS started Karate this year and it has given him a big appetite which is great!

Not that I put a ton of stock in the height/weight chart, but if is he maintaining the same percentile range, I wouldn't worry too much. DS is 6yrs, at least 46" (he hasn't let me measure him in months, but his pants are looking short) and about 43lbs. He was stuck at 39lbs for a long time. I just make sure we always have plenty of the proteins he will eat. (beans & peanut butter)

I just measured DS. He is 44lbs and 46" tall. He's had a growth spurt since the beginning of the school year. We've had to buy new pants. He fornunately loves yogurt and go-gourt. That, pb&j, chicken nuggets and pizza are his staple diet. I have to trick him into getting his fruit & veg. Maybe getting him involved in heavy sports activities would increase his appetite as it did my son?

  • Are you worried about him from a health standpoint? I know the pedi said he is fine, but it never hurts to get a second opinion even if it's just for your own piece of mind.  I have a friend that has dealt with this with her daughter for years and the biggest thing about food is not to turn it into a control thing. Don't force feed or punish him for things related to food, but also don't cater to his every request because you are worried he isn't eating enough. If the child sees the parent stressing about food it can lead to control issues and eating disorders. Offer him healthy meals and if he doesn't eat don't react negatively, reoffer the same food later in the day if he is hungry. When he is hungry he will eat it.
