Reduced fetal movement!

Im 24 weeks and have been feeling baby kicking from 16 weeks the movements are strong and regular and I am aware of babys active and inactive periods, however over yesterday and today I have felt only 2-4 movements, I've had plenty of free time and have been able to focus on it, I've tried cold and warm drinks and sugary foods and lying on my side and nothing has worked, any advice on what I should do? Or any advice to get the little one moving, I'm so worried :(

Re: Reduced fetal movement!

  • I'm 25w3d today and I've been going through cycles - I have some days when I have a lot of movement and some that I don't. Right now they are sleeping a lot and tha time could just coincide when you are awake. My understanding is that right now is not a time when we should be putting that much thought into how often the baby is moving. If you are concerned, I would bring it up at your next OB appointment, but it's likely everything is fine.

  • I'm sure it's fine. I'm 27w 4d and sometimes there are lulls between movements. Baby's gotta sleep! But I asked my OB and she said he/she may have slipped into a certain spot and it's harder to feel the kicks. There has definitely been an increase in movement from 24 to 27 weeks though so I wouldn't worry too much. If you are then call your doctor in the morning for peace of mind.

You still feel the baby moving...so...is it possible since you are only 24 weeks LO is just not active today? You say you had free time...maybe a change in your activity caused a change in LO...that seems kind of obvious. Generally I've found the rocking motion of my activity lulls baby, and sitting still gives him a chance to go to town, hence more active at night. No one on this board can diagnose you unfortunately (trust me I'm a doctor), are you asking for advice to encourage activity or are you genuinely worried about a medical problem? (Btw...I'm not actually a doctor...which is why you should be cautious of seeking medical advice here, see what I did there).

  • Thanks girls :) I looked online for some info but couldn't find any relevant to my situation so I thought I'd make a discussion :) hopefully he's just feeling lazy
  • Actually I wasn't seeking medical advice, I'm aware that if I have a pressing issue the I need to see a doctor or medical professional, I simply wanted to see what other ladies thought of my situation, as I'm aware that reduced fetal movement in early(ish) pregnancy can be misleading :)
  • A friend of mine was just experiencing this at the beginning of the third trimester. She didn't feel any kicks for a few days, so her doctor sent her to triage. She ended up seeing movement with scans, she just couldn't feel them. They told her that sometimes baby goes through growth spurts and gets too big to flip around much and then the uterus catches up with the growth and they can flip around again. I'm definitely planning on asking at my next appointment how often I should be feeling movement and how long I should wait before calling.

GREAT! Next time, this might be a great question to ask in either the Daily Symptoms or FFFQ thread!

If you are new to these boards, please look around... Someone posts about lack of fetal movement basically every day. And the answers are always the same: yes we all experience this, it's probably nothing to worry about and if you are worried, ask your doc.

Please don't take offense, but there have been an excessive amount of posts like this recently and so for the sake of keeping the boards organized many of us might redirect you to a better thread for the question or let you know this is not a new question here.
  • Yes I'm new, I'm it sure how to search threads or anything yet still trying to get the hang of it :)
  • @emmamc1 welcome! For future reference, to search, there's a search bar on the right side of your screen if you're on the computer and at the bottom if you're on mobile. Hope this helps! Also, as PP have said, 24 weeks is probably too early for movement to truly be regular, but if you're worried, never hesitate to call your doctor/midwife :)
