August 2015 Moms

Am I the only one not prepared yet

I'm 16 w 4 d and my friend keeps telling me to start building a stock pile of diapers, researching bottles and pacifiers ect.

I have a stock pile of some non gender specific clothes and my family is helping with the crib but I have no plan on stock piling diapers any time soon. Iv researched pros and cons of vaccines and cercumcise (if we have a boy)
But I haven't really done much preg. Exercise and have not been eating the greatest.
Am I alone?

Re: Am I the only one not prepared yet

  • I'm 14 weeks and we have have literally nothing. I'm ok with this. We don't know gender plus I plan on cloth diapering so my stockpiling plans are a little different. We plan on having baby in a bassinet in the beginning and baby wearing so I'm not too worried about stockpiling or getting items already. I know it'll all come together quickly and lots of it we'll get at our shower in June.

  • Are you exercising, taking classes or eating right?
  • Relax. You have plenty of time. I haven't gotten any big purchases and I am not an exerciser. It will all work out in the end
  • I'm really prepared now but this is my second. With my first I wasn't totally ready and set for baby until about 37 weeks along. There's a lot to do! I wouldn't worry about it, you'll be ready enough.

  • The eating right comes and goes for me. As for ready I have a lot less to do with this being our second.

Relax and enjoy pregnancy it will all come together!
  • I'm a FTM, 12.6 weeks and have not bought a single thing for baby. We found out today it's a girl, so I am more tempted to start buying now. I definitely have been taking care of myself, reading books and preparing mentally- just no purchases for baby yet.
  • I've done nothing for this baby other than go to my dr appointments. Lol. I mean this is my third so I have a lot of stuff already but even with my first I didn't purchase until well after 20 weeks.

Diapers bottles and pacifiers I wouldn't stock pile at all because they are very baby specific and you won't know what your baby will like. I would buy (or register for) 1 small pack of whatever you want to try first (for all 3) and then go from there.

  • Due to a previous miscarriage I didn't prepare for my first until way into the 3rd trimester. I wasn't convinced I was bringing a baby home so I didn't buy anything! You've got plenty of time, at some point the urge to get everything ready will overcome you and once you make big purchases like crib and car seat the rest happens more easily.
  • I mostly feel bad about exercising and eating right I'm already plus size. I havnt gained weight I have actually lost (my doctor said it was okay) but with a bigger belly on top of belly fat I feel really fat! And out of shape.
  • Your not alone. On some level it doesn't feel real yet. Hopefully after my anatomy scan that will change.
  • This is my second and NEVER thought to stock pile diapers. Is this some new thing? We had a big box of NB diapers on top of what we took from the hospital when we brought DS home and my poor husband ran to target whenever we needed more. He was an antsy staying home and being off work, he jumped at the chance to run errands.
But honestly, it was never an issue. (Or maybe I don't remember? Ha!)
  • It's still very early OP. I haven't purchased a thing yet either and I don't plan to for a while. You've got time, relax.

I bought a diaper bag and picked out a crib, but that's about it! Haha
  • No worries, all a baby needs is diapers (the hospital will have them if you use disposable), a boob & love. You are fully prepared.

  • I'm nearly 15 weeks have have absolutely nothing!, I don't plan on buying anything till I know the sex
That and I also baby sit for a job which isn't a lot of money so I'm just saving till the time is right to buy the things, there's really no rush this early on I don't think
  • The only thing we have bought so far for this baby is clothes. Granted this is our second so we already have a crib, change pad and stroller.
Honestly no book or class will truly prepare you for being a mother. Once they hand you that baby you will know what to do with trial and error, I promise. And all the baby truely needs at first is a car seat, some blankets, diapers a place to sleep and your boobs/or bottles if you choose.

Of coarse it is important as it always is to try to eat well and take care of yourself. But if you were not exercising before you were pregnant is generally not advised to start once you become pregnant. Just stay active by walking daily and you will be just fine!

  • I'm not entirely sure how far along I am; around 12-14 weeks. I only have what is left from our previous babies minus clothes (I got rid of all the baby clothes). I cloth diaper so I have a ton of cloth leftover.

There's still so much time to prepare. Just focus on the most important which is exercise and nutrition. The diapers will come sooner or later: you won't have a choice lol!

  • I did not buy anything either ! I am a ftm and I don't know the sex of the baby yet, I did not do anything apart from lurking the internet for stuff :) . Don't worry you're not alone !!!
  • You are not alone in that. I dont even have my baby room cleaned out yet! About the diapers, if you ganna have a reveal party, give raffles for X-amout of diapers they bring. Or just do a diaper party. Its fun and can split the stress of transporting gifts at a baby shower. Save up till you have a baby shower and then go shopping after for what you don't get.

  • All I have is a crib up and 2 gender Nuteral shirt that the baby won't even be able to wear until it's older. You know how many diapers you will get from your baby shower? We won't know what our baby is until 2 more weeks! So we won't buy anything until then.
  • We didn't start buying anything until after we knew the sex with DD (other than 2 mommy hopeful boy outfits right after I found out I was pregnant). You are not behind... Babies need very little.... We cloth diapered DD but the hospital sent is home with 3 packs of diapers so there really was nothing we needed other than clothes for quite a while, we had other stuff but it wasn't needed. A place for baby to sleep and a car seat, some clothes and baby wipes, baby soap/lotion are all that is really required for a good month. They are pretty simple if nursing to care for because they really just need momma the first few weeks.
  • Don't feel bad. I'm 15weeks and I have nothing as well. OH WELL. There's still plenty of time! I'm hoping. 8-| :|:\">
  • I'm 15 wks 4 days and I'm just trying to get the results of my maternity 21 test, and to pass the 16 weeks mark. My hubby and I haven't even told our parents or any family yet. Talk about NOT prepared ... don't fret, you have plenty of time . As for eating, no one is perfect. Just make sure you take your prenatals.
  • I haven't done a lot either. I am eating healthy etc but haven't researched much as far as purchasing things etc. Honestly my goal was to survive the first trimester and go from there. It'll come together!

Pretty much. You have time. I won't even start cleaning out the nursery until after our anatomy scan.

Wow Blairbear28 that was rude! Just because you possibly have a differing view point doesn't mean you should judge someone else for their decision, or spelling. Get your hormones in check lady.

I actually thought this was rude. Just because someone says something you don't like, you blame hormones instead of just realizing that they may have been a little snarky? That's really insensitive for anyone who actually does battle with hormonal imbalances. It's also degrading to pregnant women in general to say that a display of a negative emotion is of course due to hormones. Comments like these also fuel the notion that pregnant women don't have real justification for their emotions/thoughts because it's "just her hormones talking."

Edited to add: I'm not siding with either person, just pointing out that your last sentence was quite rude towards all pregnant women.
  • You are totally fine, just enjoy the pregnancy as much as you can. If you had nothing when baby was born, you'd still be fine! They send you home with some diapers, and if you plan to nurse you're set with food.
Some things that are good to have soon: bassinette, nursing pillow, pump and nipple cream. We also used gas drops early, and some swaddle blankets. As for diapers, some newborn one's are nice, but as they get bigger you'll probably have a brand preference. They don't need a crib for a few months, and We didn't go through more than one outfit per day until they're older. Sometimes even less since they don't get messy and there is no reason to bathe them too often at first.
  • I'm 17 wks. Haven't bought anything. Mostly becuase were planning to move apartments in the next few months. No diapers bottles every clothes. Just plans and more plans. We find out the gender sunday... I'm sure that will kick me into high gear. Exercising I've been doing good at granted I was already active. Healthy eating comes and goes but I try to stay even
  • I am 17 weeks 4 days and I have not bought a single thing. lol! I get kind of nervous sometimes too when I think about it. But once I started playing around on my registry I felt a lot better. :) Its also hard because like PP said, I don't know the gender yet. I go for my 20 week scan in 17 days and after that I think it will feel a little more real, and be a little more easier to look for things. . A lot of my friends that are second time moms have been reassuring me not to panic, and that everything falls into place. :) no need to worry!
Always hold on to hope ❤

Exactly!  It sounds so weird, especially because I am having all the typical pregnancy symptoms but part of me still doesn't feel pregnant yet.  Like it's not real for some reason.  I think once I can picture a little boy or a little girl, and we decide on a name it will feel more real.

But to OP, no I don't think it's that unusual.  A lot of people suggest not stockpiling bottles or diapers because each baby can prefer something different.  Do you really want to stock up on hundreds of Huggies only to find out they give baby a rash for some reason?  You have plenty of time to get the essentials.  Plus you don't really want to go on a spending-spree until you see what others might gift you.  We plan on purchasing the big items like the crib, but holding off on all the little stuff until after our shower.  People love to gift blankets and clothes.  If you have a shower or even just a big family, you may not need to buy any of these items.
  • I'm seventeen weeks. I've purchased gender-neutral nb clothing and pajamas, three packages of diapers and that's it! Eventually we will get a swing and bassinet but I'm counting on my friend's hand-me-downs and the shower. With my first son I had clothes we never even took the tags off of! So it's simple this go-round.

Where I'm from you only buy baby stuff after the baby is born. At 8 months you shop for basic and have it delivered after baby is healthy and all is well. But diapers? You can always buy diapers and clothes. I think you should do what feels best for you.
  • I haven't spent a dime on anything yet. And I'm 19 weeks along. The excited grandma might have already bought everything (including girls clothing and girl toys guess I don't need to ask what she is hoping for). Finally got her to stop on the gender specific things. For some odd reason I think it might be a boy. I think it will be funny if it is after she bought so many gender specific things I told her not to. But I got her started on diapers if she insists on spending her money. And that's all I'm asking for from people is various sizes of diapers.
But everyone is so excited about this it doesn't look like we're going to be buying much at all. But I'm okay with that. I'll spend my money on pampering myself a bit more if they want to be insistent. No complaints here.
  • we haven't started anything yet, we wanted to find out the gender first. I'm 17 weeks and we just found out yesterday. started going over some room ideas and looking at the basics but that's about it.
  • Stockpiling diapers had been mentioned to me on a few occasions and I don't really get it. I have never seen walmart or target run out and they go on sale quite regularly. Also a friend of mine had stockpiled last year and the ones she bought really didn't work out for her baby. She ended up giving them all to another one of our new mom friends.
I am just over 15 weeks and have bought nothing. I figure I will wait until the 3rd trimester or until I see something I love and just cannot pass up. : )
  • I think the stockpile diaper thing is more of a spread the expense over a period of time plus those first few weeks you don't need to be rushing out for them.
That being said I only have a few things put aside, including a few packs of diapers and lots of room ideas.
  • We are stocked to the brim! But only because my Husband will be deploying a few short days after I give birth so he wanted to make sure I wasn't running out to grab diapers and wipes all the time. We have about 600 diapers sizes NB-2 and about 30 packs of wipes.
