Working Moms

What do you do if your kids are sick or have a snow day on a work day?

My kids are still little, will be 3 next month. I work two 10 hour days. My husband and I both have demanding jobs that are not very flexible. We have a part time nanny that works 7:30am-7pm on the 2 days that I work. She is on vacation this week, so I scheduled (in advance) 1/2 days at work. Finding someone to cover 11 hours is hard, but I can get someone to do 8am-1 or 2pm. Well, my back up sitter cancelled this week b/c her kids are sick. My kids got sick. I went through a few other back ups and only 1 was available- IF it didn't snow...well it did snow. So, I had to call in sick to work. Luckily, they were "OK" with it b/c I was only scheduled a 1/2 day, so it didn't affect too many people. My work makes it VERY hard to miss work at the last minute. DH can be flexible, but he is also sometimes very inflexible. This week, he is super busy at work and had meetings scheduled with many people (some from California), so he couldn't miss work.

I was thinking of how much harder this situation will be when my kids are in school and we don't have a nanny anymore.

How do working parents handle this????

Re: What do you do if your kids are sick or have a snow day on a work day?

  • I'm fortunate to have my mother and mother-in-law nearby, so if I absolutely cannot take off work I can ask one of them to keep DD. My mom is retired, so it's very nice having her around.
  • It's tough for us as well. DH and I have to have a quick rationale conversation on who needs to go to work more when this happens. My mom lives close but still works as well. My mil lives about 45 minutes away and if DS is sick won't touch him with a ten foot pole, so she's out. Luckily, I can do some work from home if need be. DH can't. And my office has a lot of people with young kids, so the bosses are fairly understanding. I try to keep ds as healthy as possible and we avoid places like the plague during January-March in hopes to reduce our chances of being sick. Thankfully our daycare rarely closed due to weather.

  • I just read this after posting and we have similar situations. As the pp, most people I ask this question to have family support nearby. We don't. My colleagues do tell me it gets easier as they get older, they can work from home and the kids can play nearby. Obviously this would only be for an emergency situation. That said, I have a girlfriend who still has a full time nanny for her 7 year old who is in school. I never understood this before I had kids, no I completely do. Best of luck to you!

  • When your kids are older maybe you will meet some SAHMs in your neighborhood who can help out?

I'm lucky I'm that I can work from home pretty much any time unless I have client meetings or have to travel. Right now DH is home with the kids during the day anyway, but once the kids are in school full time, he will be working days again, so we'll then we'll have to take turns staying home.

  • My daughter is not school aged yet, but I have a very flexible job. It's easier for me to take off work than my husband (he is in the Army).
  • "When your kids are older maybe you will meet some SAHMs in your neighborhood who can help out?"

I can't think of a SAHM who would take a sick kid off your hands for the whole day. In my opinion, that would take a lot of nerve to even ask.
"Here's my germy, sick kid. Hope yours don't get it. Thanks!"
You're not going to make many friends with your SAHM neighbors that way.
  • Just lurking on this board, but our local YMCA offers snowday childcare, which was a godsend when my daughter was young. Basically we paid a small fee upfront (less than $100) for snowday insurance, and then they provided childcare there on snowdays for all who signed up in advance. If schools have more than a certain number of snowdays, you pay an additional fee. I'm sure other Ys offer this- you should look into it!
