Will your DC eat veggies?

And did you eat veggies while pg?  Do you think there is a link?

I tried really hard to eat veggies but mostly they totally grossed me out while pg.  (and again this pg)  My DS started out eating all jars of baby food and never disliked any so I hoped he would eat real veggies.  Well now I can't get him to eat them.  I try all the time, and sometimes he will get on a kick and eat green beans or carrots, but he usually refuses them.  Oh, and he won't touch fruit!  What kid doesnt' like fruit?!?

I really want him to be a healthy eater, any advice?
Has anyone had a kid refuse veggies early on and then start eating them later?  I feel like he is starting bad habits early.

Or how do you cook veggies?  I have to admit that I'm pretty boring with a little butter, salt and pepper.

Sorry, lots of questions!

Re: Will your DC eat veggies?

  • I was not a big veggie eater but tried...like you.  My DC's ALL liked (still do) veggies.  Especially brocolli, squash, sweet potatoes, greenbeans, and beets.  None of them are big on peas for some reason.  lol

They eat them with butter, salt and pepper.  I don't do the cheese sauce because my DH doesn't eat cheese (except Swiss and Mozz).

  • DD will eat most vegetables.  Broccoli is still a no go for her though.  I ate veggies while pregnant, but not tons of them.  Lately the only green beans I can get DD to eat is canned ones (GROSS!)  I try and get the no salt added ones most the time.  Apparently she liked the green beans slimy *gags* and no matter how long I cook them and how soggy I get the fresh ones she will not eat them.
  • Unfortuanately, I don't know that I have good advice for you, but I wanted to tell you that DD is the same way for us (except she loves fruit).  I didn't eat a ton of veggies when I was pregnant with DD, but I didn't eat any less than I do normally.  She NEVER wanted to eat veggies as an infant.  She didn't even want to eat squash or sweet potatoes (which most kids like).  She is an extremely picky eater, but because she likes fruit...she will get her healthy nutrition from that.  We do feed her what we are eating in the evening and always offer her veggies.  She has never even attempted to eat them, but I'm hoping someday that will change.  Maybe something to consider...DD did eat veggies over the summer, fresh from our garden.  She would eat fresh peas, grean beans, tomatoes, and chives.  She wouldn't eat any of them however, if we cooked them or gave them to her in her highchair.  She's a weird kid, but maybe he would eat them fresh vs. cooked.  Hopefully it too is a passing phase!
  • I wouldn't say that DS loves to eat his veggies, but he is pretty good about it.  That is usually the main thing we ask him to eat.  He has to at least eat most of his veggies before he can get up from the table, and that has worked pretty well for us.  Also, I have heard that it can take up to 10 tries before a child will like what they are eating, so keep at it.

For all my veggies, I drain and saute them in a little EVOO and sprinkle them with a greek blend called Cavender's.  It's really good.

    Good Luck!

  • DD loves - corn, green beans, carrots, lettuce/salads, and red bell peppers.

I have always been a big veg eater so we always have them and like to offer differnt ones to DD.

  • I'm usually a huge veggie eater, but for whatever reason they aren't appealing while pregnant. I still get some down every day because I know I need them, but they just don't taste very good. My daughter is a huge veggie eater, so I don't think whether or not you eat them pregnant has much effect. She has been known to put down a cookie when green beans were available (weirdo!). I steam them and that's it... no butter, salt, seasoning or anything.

  • I didn't eat many while pregnant.  However, DS loves most veggies.  Thank goodness because he won't eat anything else!

  • ds goes through phases on what veggies he eats but he is a good eater and always is into some veggie or other.

i do a mixture of plain veggies like peas or frozen mixed veggies served to him totally plain  or he eats his veggies mixed into a main dish such as broccolli cooked into a pasta sauce or in with stir fry, tonight he'll eat carrots cooked with my roast or cooked peppers and onions in with some sort of asain stir fry.  he's not a huge lover of fresh veggies except for tomaotes and the occasional cucumber slice.

would you dc eat celery sticks or cucumber sticks with cream cheese or peanut butter...we just tried "ants on a log".  he ate a few bites of celery adn then just ate all the raisins ;)

  • I ate a lot of veggies with my first pregnancy b/c my husband was the food cop and insisted I eat veggies at every meal (when he was present anyways).  My oldest is not a fan of veggies, but he's 3 so I can bribe or threaten him now.  For instance, eat your veggies and you can have a bagel(he's so into all types of bread!), or take a bite or else i'm going to take away your toy (he plays with toys at the table).

My youngest loves veggies!  He is almost two, his favorite is peas he will shove them in by the fist full.  Last night he picked up a piece of broccoli off my plate and just started eating it and making noises like it was the best thing ever.

I am boring as far as cooking...frozen peas, canned peas and carrots, canned green beans.  But I make a salad almost every night so my youngest will now eat the brocolli and my oldest can choose between brocolli and peppers (he usually chooses peppers.)

I did buy a pizza yesterday at stop and shop that had peppers on it and both my kids chowed it.  It was in the organic section, can't remember what it was called.  Other brands they have not liked but this they ate almost the whole thing!

  • DS usually does really great with veggies.  I have always eaten a lot of veggies, even while pg and bf.
  • Ethan will eat just about any veggie, Bella isn't a huge fan anymore (she did used to eat them). I eat lots of them, but not when I was pregnant (I was so sick and veggies didn't appeal to me often).

I do add a lot of veggies to rice and pasta dishes, and Bella will eat them then. I make quiche quite often which has them, or burritos or quesadillas with tomatoes or peppers or both. We do a lot of variety, too, not just the normal green beans, peas, or carrots. I cook rutabagas and parsnips and sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts, etc. I make sure my kids see me eat them and that I enjoy them--that's really all I can do.

I think a kid is going to like them or they're not. I have not done anything different with my kids, but one loves veggies and the other despises them. Expose him to lots of different choices, and make sure you and DH eat them in front of him, and he may begin to like them.

I either steam or roast them most of the time, or saute them in olive oil.

  • My DS won't touch a vegetable, hasn't probably ever touched a whole vegetable.  He will eat pureed veggies still, though.  I love veggies and ate salad a ton when I was PG.  I'm sure I ate cooked veggies too, it's a big part of my diet. My DS won't touch fruit either.  When he was 1 y/o he'd ate a coulple bananas and had melon a few times and then he decided he didn't like it.  he is texture averse, so it doesn't surprise me.  The only fruit he'll eat now is watermelon in a mesh food feeder or "banana pudding," aka, pureed bananas.

DD loves some veggies and she gets them plain or sometimes with a little margarine and garlic salt on it.  I ate veggies when I was PG with her too.  She loves all fruit, too.

The one thing that was different with them is that I only BF DS for 6 weeks and I BF DD for 13 mos.  I sometimes think that this is why she really likes things with flavor.  DS would probably be a better eater if he didn't have texture issues.
