Cervix Checked

Im wondering Is it true that having your cervix can actually make you dilate more than you already are? Not sure if I want to get my cervix check this week. What is y'alls opinions about this?

Re: Cervix Checked

  • I had weekly internals for four weeks and never dilated until I went into labor. I think it's just a case by case basis. I had a girlfriend who was at 3 cm 20% effaced for 3 weeks before she went into labor.

  • It's fairly common to begin internals at 36w.

I've had 3 during this pregnancy and still at 0/0.

It does cause some spotting occasionally and some cramping.

If you have a fear about it, talk to your OB.

I have my next one on 3/12 and I will be 36 weeks. If I'm 1cm. No biggie, go home and just wait for things. If I'm 4+cm, then off to the hospital I go.
  • No it will not cause you to dilate/efface. Its not a fun experience though
  • I had my first internal today along with my gbs swab too it wasn't that bad I'm 1cm no spotting since but maybe it gets worse add you get farther FTM so not sure I did cramp for like 2 minutes until I started walking then I was fine
  • I've had internals since 28 weeks due to leaking of amniotic fluid and false labor pains. I'm 34 weeks and still a 0/0.
  • I was checked for the first time at 32 weeks due to having contractions 2 minutes apart. The doctor stopped them with a shot and a bag of fluids. I was dialated 2/1. She said the cervix is still high up and thick though so it should be ok.

My doc won't start checking until 36-37 weeks because in his experience they have caused labor to start. But I think it's a case by case basis...
  • Had mine checked at 36 weeks today, no progress but he is sitting soooo low!
  • As long as I have no complications my midwives won't be checking unless I ask or until 40 weeks. You can decline any unnessecary procedure.
  • Thank you all for you input! The reason why im debating to have mine check this week is because I want to make it fullterm and have a spring baby or close to spring and the longer he bakes the better it is for him.
  • I just had my appointment on Monday (33+2) and they didn't check there. I think my doctor waits until 36 or 37 weeks.

Does anyone know if you still get checked if you are scheduled for a repeat c-section?
  • Yes you will start getting checked by 36 weeks- they usually combine the first cervix check when they do the GBS swab (generally 35/36 weeks).
  • I was checked today after my GBS but the doctor said I won't be checked again until labor unless I have contractions. He said that there's no medical reason for the checks otherwise (to which I asked why it was done today if there's no medical reason, and he couldn't come up with an answer to that. Personally, had I known it was pointless, I would've refused) :-w
  • I was checked at the beginning of this week (32 weeks and 2 days) due to cramping and an uptick of contractions over the weekend. I'm still at 0/0 (haven't lost my mucus plug yet either). It wasn't particularly comfortable, but no worse than a pap smear in my opinion. My doctor hadn't mentioned anything about it causing extra dilation, but I didn't ask either.
  • I'm 35 weeks and just had the GBS swab today but my doctor doesn't check until at least 37 weeks. It's optional at 37 but she insists weekly at 38 and further.

  • I've been getting my cervix checked with ultrasound by a specialist this pregnancy every 2 weeks due to pprom with my first baby at 35 weeks.

They did my last cervix check at 32 weeks. They will not check my cervix anymore after this week and their reasons for me were 1 - they don't want to interfere as my cervix is long and closed 2- the cervix will start changing as you get closer to the end anyway 3 - there is not much benefit this late in the pregnancy to get your cervix checked if there aren't any issues.

I don't know if getting it checked actually triggers more dilation or effacement or sends you into labor. i would ask why does it need to be checked right now. it might not be necessary.
  • I'm 34 weeks my doc has to check me cuz I been in the hospital 2wice and is already 1cm,everyone is saying I'm not going to make it to April 11 I think so to.
  • Im 36 weeks just had my cervix check at ER i was contracting in pain but it was still closed. It hurt like heck...ouch
  • cervical checks can introduce bacteria, they can induce contractions, they can break your water, and they can also provide no useful information if you aren't in labor yet.

That being said...it is perfectly fine to refuse checks until you are in labor.

It is also fine to take the early checks to see where things stand...knowing that you can walk around dilated for weeks.

IF you have had any pre-term contraction issues, getting checked to see if they are making progress can be useful.  What if you are already walking around at 4-5cm, you'd want to know now, so that when labor starts you know to head to the hospital sooner than you would have otherwise.

I took the checks with #1 b/c I didn't feel strongly one way or the other and b/c I was already scheduled for a 39w (medically necessary) induction.

I had a check with #2 at 32w because of timeable BH contractions.  I was already dilated to 3cm at that point and walked around at 3cm until my 39w induction.

This time I think I will refuse checks until my 38w appointment, unless my BH kick in hard core again.

  • My midwife offered last week (35) since I had to get the strep test anyways. But I said no, I'll just be surprised when I actually go into labor.
  • My doctor checked mine around 24 weeks because I had been having cramping and intermittent pelvic pain. Not sure when she'll check it again, but as prior posters said you can walk around somewhat dilated for weeks so not sure how useful the information is. I'll get the GBS swab at 36 weeks so we'll see if she does it then.

  • I had one on Tuesday after my fall on ice, wasn't terribly uncomfortable.  They definitely didn't cause any changes when I was pregnant with DD.

  • I am 34w and have been checked a few times due to preterm labor. They can do gentle checks which shouldn't necessarily stimulate anything. Friday I went in for an appointment because I was having BH 2-5 min apart and they checked. I was 2cm, 50% and -1. They sent me to the hospital to give me the steroid shot for the baby's lungs and stop labor. I went back yesterday for shot #2 and they checked me again because my contractions were 2 min apart and my plug fell out that morning. No changes! So 5 checks in 2 days and I didn't change so i guess it depends on your body :)
  • I was planning on refusing checks but had painful BH on Monday and sent for my NST. The pain stopped but I was still contracting every 4-5 minutes according to the monitor, so the mw said they really needed to check me. I was 35&2 that day and not dilated. 70% effaced, but cervix was medium. It needs to be soft to dilate. Doesn't really matter, I could be 70% effaced and closed for another month.
  • It has no effect on further dilation or labor. I was 2cm dilated for 4 weeks before going into labor with my second son. Last Tuesday I had my GB swab test and my OB asked if I wanted her to check my cervix. Since I have been having contractions on and off for a few weeks and lots of pressure down there, and she was already in there anyways, I said to go ahead and do it. I was a fingertip dilated and thinned out. I was 35 weeks, 6 days at the time. She warned me about spotting and maybe some cramping afterwards, but I had neither.

  • Was anyone given an outer and inner cervix measurement?  They told me I was 4 on the outer and 2 on the inner and I have no idea what that means.
