Sleep Suggestions?

Hi All, Recently I've been struggling to sleep. I get pretty awful nasal congestion when trying to fall asleep at night.  I've started using a humidifier and that helps some but unless I'm turned directly facing the humidifier it does nothing for me.  Also, since I'm not really supposed to sleep on my back or stomach I've solely been sleeping on my sides.  This starts to hurt after awhile--more specifically at my ankles, knees and hips.  I have a pregnancy pillow that I am sleeping with but doesn't seem to help.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Sleep Suggestions?

  • My pain is in my back. I just keep having to change sides everytime it gets so bad I can't stand it & hope I eventually fall asleep. Icing helps me but maybe try heat for your ankles? Also I do have to take Tylenol &/or Unisom more nights than not (both approved by OB of course). Have you tried a warm bath with Epsom salt before bed? Soaking in those can help with pain too. I also try to distract myself from my pain by turning the TV on or just imagining my body healing and releasing the pain. I've dealt with chronic pain since before my pregnancy but practicing visualization can help some especially when all else has failed. I hope you find some relief.

  • I also do Unisom, and occasionally Tylenol PM, but my pregnancy pillow only helps with the addition of sleeping on top of pillows-specifically right under my hip area. My Snoogle is also elevated a bit in the head region, by two pillows. Basically, I sleep on a pillow mountain, constantly switch sides so my hips don't hurt, and take sleep aids. Hope you get some relief!
  • Oh & I do sleep on a triangle pillow because of my GERD & constant congestion & nasal drip. Aldehyde hacking stuff up, it's wonderful. I use it with my pregnancy pillow & one under my belly. Like @SmashJam I sleep on a mountain of pillows too.
  • I keep waking up on my back when I Do actually get to sleep....... Tried unisom and strangely it only works sometimes.... Any suggestions are awesome! Love this thread.
  • I have trouble sleeping too. I am a side sleeper anyways, so you'd think it would be easier for me. But the extra weight around my middle is causing me to have pressure point pain in my downward hip, so I end up rolling around a lot. What I did was use a memory foam pillow and I actually use that under my hip area now (a mattress topper would work wonders, I'm sure, but I don't want to go buy one, and this works fairly well). Another pillow folded in half between my legs to keep my top hip aligned. And to prevent rolling onto my back in my sleep I have a third pillow tucked up behind me. DH calls it my pillow fort. I'm basically replicating a snoogle, cause I don't want to go buy one. Also, I take OB approved benadryl before going to bed to 1) keep me from getting stuffy and 2) hopefully help me stay asleep. I do OK. Some nights are better than others, and some nights I find that I do better without all of my pillow fort, it just depends.
I'm sure we will all get less and less sleep as time goes on (bleh). If anyone has the magic, please share!

  • I haven't been sleeping well due to rib pain, worsened by sleeping on my side. I took Gaviscon for heartburn last night (what I thought was a separate issue from the rib pain), and was shocked that it really helped my rib pain, and thus I slept better, too.

So just a vote for looking into medicine to help your congestion. I found treating my worst symptom helped almost all my other symptoms, too. Now I feel silly for fighting so long not to take anything! (Doctor told me rib pain was normal and couldn't be helped...)

Also, I was so congested earlier in 2nd trimester but am not nearly as bad now. So there's hope! We moved apartments, and this one has so much less "stuff" - last place had so many shelves full of books. I think they collected dust. So airing out the bedroom every day was also something that helped me.

    Good luck!!
  • For congestion and dehydration I'm doing a humidifier plus saline nasal spray. I haven't tried nasal strips but those could help too?
  • I used the nasal strips and saline nasal spray when I was super congested earlier this month and both seemed to help.
  • I found that I started sleeping better when I was exercising a few times a week. I noticed my legs are more likely to bother me after 2+ days without the gym.

I usually sleep with a small blanket(big towel would work) rolled up and tucked behind me (stops me from rolling onto my back), and a thin pillow under my belly and a bigger pillow between my legs. And I switch sides every few hours when I get up to pee. So far, working like a charm most nights!
  • Breathe right strips work great for congestion! A netti pot also really helps!
  • I sleep propped up on pillows....usually on my sides, but occasionally on my back. It's more sitting up than lying flat when I'm on my back. I also take Benadryl to help with the congestion at night and I sleep with a humidifier. It's been pretty helpful so far.
