3rd Trimester

Anyone experienced a lot of hiccuping and/or fast, jerky movements? Looking for info or reassurance

I am 32 weeks and have been experiencing a LOT of hiccups since 27-28 weeks. One night, at 28 weeks, I experienced massive hiccuping and a lot of Braxton Hicks in a row, so we ended up in L&D.  I thought for sure they'd say I was nuts, but it turned out I was dehydrated and needed IV fluids.  I insisted on an ultrasound, which didn't show any problems.  At my 31 1/2 week appointment doctor told me everything is fine and it's my anxiety.

Fast forward to now and I suppose I just can't shake a feeling that something is off because so many of my pregnant friends have no idea what I'm talking about when I mention this constant hiccuping and these fast, jerky movements that I get in a far less frequent fashion.  Jumping onto Google is always terrifying because I've read a medical journal article about rapid movements and seizures in utero. :(

Is anyone else experiencing hiccup sessions (think 3-5 times a day for 10 minutes or so) and/or these rapid jerky movements?  I love my OB, but because of my generalized anxiety I think pretty much everything I say is chalked up to anxiety.

  • Lol yes hiccups are very normal- baby has them multiple times a day...

  • Are you talking about your baby hiccuping? If so that's completely normal. Nothing to be concerns with.

  • OMG I'm at 35 weeks with my 1st and DS won't stop hiccuping! I have 2-3 10-15 min sessions. At first I thought it was cute, and now after a couple of months of this it's just become annoying. I think it annoys me more though because prior to becoming pregnant I suffered from muscle/nerve twitches throughout my body since I was a kid. I had them so often I thought I had Tourette's or Parkinson's. It must've be a mineral deficiency, dehydration, or something similar, because after a few weeks of being on prenatal vitamins they've completely stopped. I just have to take a deep breath and realize that hiccups are a sign of a healthy baby. From what I've read online, the baby cannot hiccup unless their central nervous system is completely formed.

As far as the fast jerky, seizure-like movements...Yep, it's completely normal! I too was freaking out several weeks ago because I though the baby was in distress - the movements didn't/don't seem human like. I told my OB about my concerns and she explained to me that babies don't move the same way we do because they're in a tight space and everything is still developing. A few times he has kicked/elbowed me so hard I feel like he's going to be born with a knife in his hand lol Hopefully he'll be more chill when he's out! Hope this helps!
