Leg cramps!!

So this is the first time I have had this out of all 4 of my pregnancy. I wake up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in my right calf. It has happened just a handful of times but last night I wanted to scream. This morning it still hurts. It is my bad leg with all the varicose veins, so I don't know if that has something to do with it. Anyone have any suggestion? I meant to ask my Dr. at my last visit and forgot...

Re: Leg cramps!!

  • I get feet cramps ALL the time. To the point that I have to get up out of bed and walk around for like 20 minutes before it will go away.  I'm always told that I need to increase water.  I would make sure you tell your doc though.  Just to make sure it's nothing serious!

  • leg cramps mean a lack in one or all of the following:  Calcium, potassium or magnesium.  Do you eat yogurt?  thats a good way to get all those in.  Some yogurt with a banana cut up in it and some almonds on top would be great for breakfast or a snack.  Leafy greens can also be of help. So a smoothie made with yogurt, a frozen banana, some kale or spinach, berries and ground flaxseed would be another great cramp busting choice!   Whenever I start to feel some tightness in my legs like a cramp might be coming on I know to boost up my yogurt intake.  I try to eat non fat plain greek yogurt everyday anyways, but if leg cramps start I bump it up to 2 or three times a day at least for a while.
  • I did talk to the nurse today at my Dr.s office. She said I was probably low on calcium or potassium. I did notice that the prenantal vitamins I have been taking have no calcium in them. Which is weird, they are even prescription. I have also had low levels of potassium before, so I guess I really need to up those.

Thanks @cneiding for the idea's! I did eat 2 yogurts, a banana, and drank some Gatorade today. Think I will pick up some spinach and flaxseed tomorrow! I think I have some almonds in the cupboard, will have to go look! :)

  • Agree with @cneiding, and it looks like you've already talked to your doctor.  I find bananas really help me.  Anytime I start feeling any tightness, I know to increase the potassium.  I used to get leg cramps years ago and would actually limp the next day because of the pain from the night before.  They are awful, aren't they?
