Mature Placenta

Went to my doctor today for another blood pressure check and labs and all came back normal but then received a call on my way home saying my last ultrasound almost 12 weeks ago showed a mature placenta. I have no idea what this means and trying not to freak out but scared it could hurt my baby. The doctor said I would be starting NST testing but didn't make it seem like it was that big of a concern. Anyone have the same experience? Any advice/thoughts?

Re: Mature Placenta

  • With my first pregnancy I had high blood pressure in the 3rd trimester. My doc said that continuous high bp can cause the placenta to age faster. I ended up having my son prior to my due date but my doc had me scheduled to be induced the day after my due date as she said it wouldn't be good for me to go too long after it due to my placenta aging faster which as some point it stops working and breaks down.

  • I would ring them back and get an adequate explanation. It could be everything or nothing. Only they can tell you that.
  • I would call them back and ask for a more detailed explantion, I agree with PP. But also, what I don't understand is why they couldn't tell you at your next appointment that directly followed your u/s from 12 weeks ago about this issue?! In 12 weeks, if you have an appointment schedule like mine, you should have se your doctor at least 2-3 times since that u/s was done... Why did they wait until now to tell you?
  • That's what caused a lot of the anxiety for me was if it showed up then why am I just finding out now! I think it's possibly because I was seeing the nurse practitioner and not the delivering doctor at the time. I did call them back and wanted more of an explanation so I will be seeing the doctor tomorrow afternoon and will hopefully have all the questions answered.
  • I didn't get much of an answer on why they didn't tell me sooner, she said well they wouldn't have started NST that early anyway. That's not really good enough for me though I feel like there should have at least been another ultrasound during the time inbetween now and then. Apparently it was grade 3 mature placenta at 20 weeks which she admittedly said was rare. I am terrified and am trying to stay calm but I'm a first time mom and all of this is new to me. I see a specialist this Thursday and will be having another ultrasound. Until then I hope I don't panic to bad. She did tell me not to worry and all measurements have been right on track but easier said than done.
  • As an older mom (41), my doctors have already given me the heads up that they'll be checking my placenta at 36 weeks because it will age faster than a younger woman's.  If it show signs of wearing out, they'll induce me a week early.  If it looks fine, and lots of amniotic fluid, they won't.  Apparently that's the recommendation here, in Canada.  She didn't make it sound like a danger to the baby, just if it is wearing out, they'll have her come a little early.  I'm not a fan of the idea of induction, but whatever's best for the kiddo.
