FFFQ - Flame Free Friday Questions

Silly questions answered here!

Re: FFFQ - Flame Free Friday Questions

  • I haven't done this yet, but I'm really wanting to go get my eyebrows waxed. The only thing I've heard is that it might make the area around your eyes more sensitive and acne breakouts, but other than that I'm guessing it's safe to assume it's ok?

I can't speak to it being safe - honestly haven't thought about it, though I assume if the wax is natural it would be. I always breakout when I wax my eyebrows though. Threading trumps waxing anyday!
  • I have one - maybe not exactly silly, but here's a good place for it anyway.

How many nursing moms actually don't wear underwire bras? I honestly can't imagine going out in public without an underwire bra, and of course my breasts will be even bigger when I'm nursing. If you did avoid them, was it starting from birth/milk coming in, or earlier? I'm leaking now, and wonder if I should be changing bras now.
  • I did not wear underwire bras while nursing. Well, I did once and started dealing with a clogged duct, so I put that one away. I normally wear underwires. You don't need to worry about it until your milk comes in, but you will want to have bought a few before then. For the first few weeks, you will probably want to go with something super comfortable and fairly unstructured. It just makes life easier. Once you are going out among actual people, there are a lot of non-underwire bras that offer good support. If you have one in your area, I highly recommend going to a real lingerie store and getting fitted when you are 36 weeks or so. You won't get a good measurement before then. Get a few styles, because you won't know what works for you.
Blessed Mama to the sweetest boy in the world (11/9/13), one angel baby, and two fur babies: Mattie Dog and Stanley Cat.
  • I can't wear any underwires anymore now that I've gotten so much bigger. They hurt! I have found some great nursing bras at Soma and motherhood that have good support without wire. (I'm a 34 DD now and popping out of these. It's crazy). I have read to avoid wires while nursing bc they can cause clogged ducts which can lead to mastitis which would not be fun. I switched to nursing bras as soon as I started outgrowing my prepregnancy ones. All my mom friends told me to go ahead and do that so id have them. I only buy 2 each time I go up a size since I don't know where I'll end up.
  • Silly related question for STMs. How big do your boobs get? I'm already up 2 cup sizes and already out of standard sizes...are they even bigger while nursing? Do you ever resume your old size?

I went from a D to an E and they never went down. This time I haven't bought a new bra yet so Idk how much bigger they are. My sister went up one size and down three.
  • @valeriemarie24 I've gotten eye brows waxed (among other things) my entire pregnancy and everything has been fine so far.
  • Sincere and honest question: Why do people care so much about the weight-gain during pregnancy thing? I mean, we have a whole thread on it and it baffles me. If the doctor says you're on track, baby is fine and you're measuring well, then why is it such a concern? Gaining weight is a part of pregnancy yet it seems like there's a trend of expecting moms counting out carrot sticks...but really, what's the deal?

My guess is just that weight is a topic that's everywhere. There is so much emphasis on it in the media and weight is idealized for the tiny versus the average... We have been conditioned to pay attention to it and c are what everyone else thinks about our weight. To the point where our own view of what's healthy and acceptable and what's not is so skewed that we believe we even have to diet whilst pregnant! *sigh*

Sadly we live in a world where a woman's worth is in large part measured by her appearance. Academics equate this with social power. And frankly any standard sized woman who sees how fat women are treated by others is probably terrified (and rightfully so) about being treated the same way if they gain weight.

  • @Frogger5 I always wore an underwire nursing bra. Still do. Motherhood Maternity has some that they say are supposed to be better than other bras because they are specifically made for that. Who knows how true that is though! Also, my boobs are pretty little. I'm still only a C so it might be different for people more blessed in that area than me!

@MrsWiggleWaggle I am wondering the same thing! I'm a STM and my boobs only went up a cup size last pregnancy but I was nursing until I was 10 weeks pregnant this time so I'm wondering if they will go down after nursing. Im also wondering if they will go up any more during this pregnancy/round of nursing. I guess we will see!
  • @amccoy129 thank you, I'm gonna check out the place by my apartment. And @upandbelow I've always been a little scared to try threading but maybe one of these days.

I think its too individual to figure out. Most women I know are smaller after nursing. I went from an A to a D last pregnancy, then up to a DD for the first 3-6 months of nursing, fell to a large B/C while I continued nursing through 11-12 months. Quit nursing and fell to a AA after a few months. I went bra shopping all the time. Now back to a C-D. I assume I'll be completely boob-less by the time this is done. If only my hips & thighs would behave like my boobs.

  • @christinabrtn @MrsWiggleWaggle I guess it shouldn't surprise me that women feel that way, but I guess I just thought that we all knew that being pregnant means that our bodies are going to change and that gaining weight is normal. While I am aware that I've gained weight I almost find that thread offensive as though I should spend my pregnancy concerned about what I will look like at the end under the guise of wanting to be healthy.
  • @frankengibbs I totally agree! Love your body for it will never be more amazing than during and after creating and carrying a new life!

Exactly! This is one of the most amazing things our bodies can do and as a FTM, but also a PGAL mom, I feel lucky that I can carry this child inside of me, even if it means my body won't look the same.

The other thing I don't get is people declaring themselves to be fat despite gaining the expected amount of weight. I mean if your weight gain is roughly within target then you haven't gained fat, you've gained baby (and amniotic fluid, uterus, fluid retention, mammary tissue etc). So no, you're not fat.

    This! 100%!
Seriously, I get that we all have our moments, not being able to fit into some of my favorite clothes was hard on me too, but I know I'm not fat. The weight we're gaining is all to baby's benefit.
  • For me, checking my weight gain against the spectrum is really no different than checking the Daily Symtpoms thread. I am trying to understand what is normal, what are my peers experiencing, what is the larger context for what I myself am experiencing. Obviously I depend on my doctor for all of these answers (from leg cramps to heartburn to weight gain), but still appreciate the responses I get here. It's the whole point of this board, for me - reading others' experiences to help me understand and process my own experience.

I went from a D to an H last time. First time around I went from a C/D to a ? I wore comfy non structured bras! The second time around I needed help from a bra
  • @Erikacolp
Can you tell me when (during your pregnancy and right after) you bumped up cup sizes?

I've bumped up from a 36D to 38DD through second trimester and need to up-size again.

I only ask about your experience because I have to order a bridesmaid dress now for a wedding that takes place when 3 months post partum (definitely thinking about sizing it up and tailoring it). Most of my friends have small or medium-sized ta-tas and aren't really helpful in this area. Thank you!

I get my eyebrows (and bikini) area waxed pretty frequently. It's never caused me to break out, but my skin's on the drier side. I do find it to be a little more painful recently, which I assume as to do with increased blood flow? It's still not awful.

For the most part, I feel just fine with weight gain as long as it's what my doctor deems healthy. However, in just the past few days,  I've had trouble getting my wedding band to fit on my ring finger, that has made pretty bummed.

  • @frankengibbs for me personally, ive been checking it out just to see if anyone else is in my boat. I lost 30 pounds during my joyous morning sickness and haven't gained any since then.. I know I've been going through cycles of being worried out of my mind that my baby hasn't gotten the right nutrition to being ok with it.. But i 100% agree as long as the doctor says baby is ok and you are healthy, who cares?!

Could be more from mild swelling than weight gain...Right before I got pregnant DH and I were planning to get my wedding ring sized and never did because it seemed better to wait until after baby...Anyways, some days it's loose like normal and other days you'd think it really was my size.

I used to always break out bad after waxing. Now that I go more frequently my face is used to it and I don't break out too bad.

I always say tell them my skin is sensitive and that they can only wax over any area once, no repeat waxing. Additionally I make sure not to touch the area and to apply lots of aloe for the next few days.
  • Sorry to reopen a thread from last week, but I have an incredibly silly question. Am I supposed to brush my baby's teeth when they are newborns? Yep, FTM here! I was working on my registry and it struck me that no one ever registers for dental items. So I'll ask the silly question...

If I remember correctly a wet wash cloth is an appropriate way to keep the gums healthy until they get teeth... And then there is a finger type brush as well for the start of teeth.
  • @hoosonfirst that's an excellent question and something I was wondering myself. Thanks to @ElRuby for answering it!

Be so thankful for this! Especially if you are nursing!

No, its a good question! Cause do you do something similar to brushing before they actually get teeth? Like, rubbing the gums with a wet washcloth? ;)

ETA and thanks to @iheartpancake for the link
