Heart Racing and out of breath. Anyone else?

several times recently I've experienced a racing heartbeat to the point of difficulty breathing. It more commonly happened when I would lay down, so I kept writing it off as difficulty breathing because of laying on my back and my baby being big for 29w, and the heartbeat being a result of getting into the bed (since, let's face it, it's not getting any easier!). But now I'm starting to think it may possibly be something else. I'll ask my dr when I go back Wednesday, but j thought someone else might've experienced this. As background, the pregnancy has been fine. I do take thyroid meds for hypothyroidism and I'm not on bed rest (my last one I was put on BR at 24w). My labs recently were great. Just slightly anemic (chronic issue for me) and +1 protein, but he said that's prob bc I had been on my feet a lot (we're going to monitor it). This is baby three. Thanks!!!

  • Calling your dr sounds like the best advice. A friend of mine has a condition where her heart races, pulse getting to 200 sometimes. When that happens they have her go to emergency. Call.
  • I've had this issue with both pregnancies. I talked to my OB and she said that it is most likely a major vein being compressed by my uterus (called vena cava) and to lay on my left side to help the symptoms subside. If you google that you will see that it is a common late pregnancy symptom. I Have almost passed out during two ultrasounds due to this. If you are worried though speak with your Dr.

  • Same here. I have hypothyroidism/anemic and am on meds and brought this up with my endo two weeks ago. She took my blood and made sure I wasn't on too high of a dose of synthroid which can cause a racing heart. Labs came back normal and she told me to lay on my left side and just try and relax. I would be getting like 180 resting heart rate. It felt crazy! But, definitely bring it up with your endo and gyno. I still get it when I've had a crazy day and finally get to rest. Good luck.
  • Call. Your. Doctor.
  • I feel like my heart races and I am out of breath when I get a braxton hicks contraction. My doctor said its totally normal. Next time it happens feel your stomach to see if its hardening.
  • I get this on frequently though the doc left it up to me if I wanted to talk to a cardiologist. I accidentally missed the appointment, but I've noticed its more common if I've had too much caffeine or if I get too hot.

Just wanted to say it again. Call your doctor.
  • I asked my dr about this atmy 30wk apt and was told its a common problem during pregnancy and as long as Im not fainting/passing out not to worry :) I seem to only get this if I lay on my right side, as soon as I flip to my left, it subsides.
  • A rapid heart rate is not something to put off. Try to time it for 1mimute, then call your doctor and report the number to them. They will determine the best course of action.
  • I get this. My OB sent me to a cardiologist who ordered an echo and heart monitor.
  • im 32 weeks and I also experience a faster heartbeat and im out of breathe easily. I have this since about 26-27 weeks. Ive always had a high pulse but now  my RHR is in the upper 90s. I lie down in bed and feel my heart in my throat and pressure in my lungs. Very uncomfortable. Most likely its just crowded due to the baby and the heart is working harder now that you have 50% more blood volume and carrying a lot of extra weight. Good idea to discuss with OB
  • You may be more anemic now. You really need to call your doctor and find out what your H&H levels are- if they are too low you can get heart palpitations, tachycardia, shortness of breath, dizziness. This is not something I would wait with
  • Oi just realized this is a super old post- hope all is well now
  • I have had this a lot lately and I got checked today Dr ordered a thyroid blood test and she said if it is not my thyroid it is anxiety she said anxiety had a vast effect during third trimester of pregnancy and can sneak up on you
  • I have also been experiencing a higher RHR and periods of breathlessness...it may be reassuring to know others are experiencing it, but you should always always call your doctor with any medical questions like that. Mine did say not to worry much about it but you are unique and your doc will know better than anyone on here.
  • I wanted to update everybody. So the dr said that there are two times in pregnancy that cause tachycardia and its normal. One is during labor, of course, the second is around 32 weeks (forgot the scientific reason though). For me, I wasn't at 32w, but my baby is measuring pretty big for normal, so it's probably that, given that my HR was around 115 or so the one time I counted. I also noticed that I was drinking two or three cokes a day (terrible, I know, and prob why he was getting huge--but for the morning sickness period, it was all I could consume). So, I quit drinking them (maybe one per day now), and I haven't felt it since.
  • Glad to hear! Thanks for the update
  • I must be a lucky one then.  Mine is between 115 and 140 all the time now.  Spent 6 hours at the hospital while they did a full work up and couldn't find anything that was causing my HR to be so high, so they sent me home.
