Anatomy Ultrasound

Hello - I went for my 19 anatomy ulrasound this week.   We were thinking we would just find out the sex, but my whole life got flipped upside down.  They found that our baby a swollen kidney, that has urine backing up in it.  The left wall of the heart is thickened.  Also, two cysts on the brain were found.  My doctor suggested that I go see a genetic specialist -but I couldn't get appointment for another week.  The stress and worrying has been killing me.  Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?  Thank you.

    I do not have anything like this to compare to, but I wanted to let you know I'm very sorry you are going through this and try to keep your chin up.

    Thank you to both of you! Its going to be a long week until we get some kind of answers. Trying not to stress- I know it's not good for me or baby. I just feel helpless.

    Hang on @ linzedeng514.- it could go away. When my sister was pregnant with my nephew he had kidney problems and a hole in his neck. It went away by the third u/s. Prayers to you and your baby!

    I'm not sure of the enlarged kidney, but I've heard of a few friends who also had cysts or spots on the baby's brain and everything turned out okay as the pregnancy progressed.  They were told all kinds of scary scenarios, but all ended well.  We had our own scare last week with a serious concern- after anatomy scan we learned all was good.  I understand how scared you are.  Just try, as hard as it is, to remain calm.  Will they continue to monitor you?  Have they given you other options of how to help the kidney?  If not, the specialist will help you.  We were required to speak to the genetic counselor first just to review things and then if there was a problem, she would tell us our options of what to do- thankfully we did not have to see her again!  I hope everything goes well!  Just keep trying to keep positive thoughts!

    Thank you everyone for your positive thoughts!  We are going to see the genetic specialist and get another ultrasound on Wednesday.  They want to confirm that everything they think they saw, is accurate.  The brain cysts are small, which is better than them being big. They want to re-examine the heart to see exactly what is going on.    At this point, I will need get sonograms every 3 weeks to watch the kidney.  The dr said sometimes the baby will just grow out of it.  If not, a surgery may be needed after birth.  I'm trying hard NOT to stress and think positive vibes.  Thank you to everyone who reached out to me.  It's comforting to know that people care.  I will keep you updated on our appointment next Wednesday, the 11th.  Thanks again!

    DS had a swollen kidney and urine backed up at our anatomy scan. we had to have weekly ultrasounds in the 3rd trimester. He saw a pediatric urologist at 2 months old and the kidney had improved some. At his 1 year check up with urologist everything was completely normal. Sometimes they just have things that look abnormal in the womb but resolve themselves as they grow. T&P that everything works out just fine.
