Hip Dysplasia

Our daughter was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 48 hours old. We have no family history and it came as quite a shock. Not to worry everyone, but just a heads up of the risk factors:

Breech babies
Females
Family history of hip dysplasia
First born children
Low amniotic fluid
High birth weight

It is diagnosed in 2 out of 1,000 babies, the sooner it is found, the better. Right now she's in a brace and wears it 24/7. It may be worn 2 weeks or a year, depends on her next orthopedic appt results.

Re: Hip Dysplasia

  • I had hip dysplasia when I was born and wore a harness for a year(that was 30 years ago) and they don't wear them as long now a days.... I am no worse for the wear. Hugs mama.

Was it because you were breech? Many of the parents on the site I frequent said they had it and their babies also had it. Mostly genetic, our orthopedic pediatrician says it's common amongst Irish and Native American.
