Harmony blood test?

Okay, I'll confess. I'm so obsessed with finding out the sex of our baby (and it being as close to accurate as possible) that I want the Harmony blood test even though I'm under 35.  I know it's main purpose is awareness of genetic disorders (which is obviously MUCH more important knowledge to have) but I do have some guilt that this is my motivation.  This is my first baby, I do not have a gender preference, but I'm just fixated on this! I don't even have an explanation as to why.  I want to be patient, but I am just too excited. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone under 35 and get the harmony blood test? Do you mind me asking if insurance covered it or what the out of pocket cost is?

Thanks :)

Re: Harmony blood test?

  • I am very fixated on the gender question! I know I shouldn't care AND I will be elated either way, but knowing one way or the other simply helps me envision things better. A bunch of my friends on another forum have done the harmony though they were under 35, basically just to find out the sex. It's not covered by our insurance but if it was, I probably would too!

  • I had it last time and I was under 35 and my insurance covered it and I had no risk factors.  Unfortunately when I had it (almost 3 years ago), it was brand new and they didn't offer finding out the sex so I still had to wait until my 20 week US. This time, I am over 35 so I had it done and will find out the sex in a week or so.  My insurance covered it.

My doc said it is around 800 if insurance doesn't cover it, but their office runs a special for 200 since they send so many over.  I would call your insurance and talk to your doctor to see if there are any special rates.

And, I wouldn't feel guilty about it!  You're excited to find out the sex and the genetic testing really gives a peace of mind if it comes back normal.  And, personally, if it comes back abnormal I would want to know too, to be prepared. :)

  • My insurance covers it if its coded as medically necessary - I don't know if they would do that under 35, but sort of hoping they will if I ask :-/

  • I'm a FTM too and couldn't wait either! We get our results tomorrow. Today is going to be the longest day ever!

We actually did the progenity test, which is basically the same as the harmony as my doctor put it. It isn't covered by insurance but is only $25. I was like WHAT? Why wouldn't I do that for only $25! :)

    So excited to find out!
  • I had it done & I am 33. Because technically it is diagnotic, our insurance did cover it. I am anxious to see the results ( for the gender!! ), but very nervous.

  • I'm 26 and we asked about it and I have no family history because I'm adopted and they said that they wouldn't perform that test and that my insurance wouldn't cover it and it's about a 3000 test! So we r obviously not getting it! But did look online and found one hat is 100 and they guarantee the results so we're thinking about that!
  • Interesting - I am in the same age bracket so I don't think insurance will cover it. In which case, I will not be getting it either.
