Anatomy Scan @ 21 Weeks - No Gender

DH and I were so pumped about our anatomy scan today and learning if we've got a little miss or mister. Though we're thrilled to learn everything checked out as normal, the tech was unable to identify gender. She said the umbilical cord was in the way (in between our velociraptor's legs), and at the very end she said "well, if I can't see anything, I'm going to go with girl." That said, she didn't give us a picture or make a note of the gender in the notes to the doctor. My OB also apologized and said they can't determine it. The office doesn't do elective ultrasounds, so we may be visiting a private 3D place soon. I just can't wait until week 30 to know! I'd like to be buying, registering, and decorating whether it's pink or blue! Gender neutral drives me crazy.

Any similar experiences? Did it end up being a little girl or boy? If it wasn't definitive, should I assume it's a little miss?

Re: Anatomy Scan @ 21 Weeks - No Gender

  • I wouldn't just assume if she was just taking a guess. I agree that you should go to one of those ultrasound places to find out in a few weeks. Some on here have the patience to be team green and some do not and I think that's fine. Be glad it's healthy but don't feel bad about wanting to know, it's your choice.

  • Thanks! I'm really not one to care what others think, so the opinion that I shouldn't care what the gender is won't phase me. I am SO relieved everything else came back normal, and I am definitely focusing on that. Just glad to get the good news/reassurance and see that wiggle worm on screen. Such an incredible thing.
  • I was high risk for my first so i got extra ultrasounds and they never could get her to cooperate. I ended up going to a 3D Place at about 28 weeks cause i really wanted to know :) and paying them and it took about 45 min to coax her into a position they could tell it was a girl!
  • The umbilical cord was in the way when I got an ultrasound a couple weeks ago as well. Mine turned out to be a boy!

That's good to hear! We'll be happy with a healthy first child either way, but I think we're both rooting for Team Blue! I think we'll be looking into a 3D ultrasound place to be sure. Thanks for the reply!

Yep, we're really considering the 3D ultrasound. Some friends are suggesting we just wait, but I just can't do it! And if my next option is the 30-week scan? Ugh! I think I'll explode!
  • I was told early on that I was having a boy the doc said he was 85% sure of it. then I went to 20 week anatomy scan it ended up being a girl. I was shocked ;)
  • I've always heard that if they say it's a girl, there's still a chance it's not. But with boys, if they see it they see it!! I would definitely wait and get a definite answer! Sorry! I know that's not what you want to hear!!
  • Ahh I went to my 20 week scan a weeks ago and I got so pissed off because the ultrasound technician was rude and rushing. She didn't even try to find the gender for me or make the baby move positions she just said, sorry the baby's legs are crossed and told us we were done. That's it! I was peeved. I have a doctors app tomorrow so I'll see if there anything they can do, if not I have a follow up anatomy scan to get better photos of the heart (because they were not clear) hoping it's nothing bad. And maybe they'll be able to try to tell me the gender at this next ultrasound. I would recommend going researching ultrasound technician schools they always do them for a low fee and they'll tell u the gender! It's accurate too because although the students are training the entire process is being looked over by a fully trained technician.

  • The ultrasound program I graduated from actively sought volunteers and I never heard of there being any cost to the mothers. The students are closely supervised by the instructors who all have several years of experience as ultrasound technologists. I know there were liability waivers the volunteers had to sign and our OB volunteers needed clearance from their physicians.
  • Thanks for the ideas, ladies!

Ugh. @camilleashleyyy that sounds awful! I'd be furious. I'll definitely be checking out some other area options.
  • Totally don't just go with her assumption that it's a girl especially when something was in the way from actually seeing "the goods". What a crazy tech. It's 50-50 on whether she's correct or not so I wouldn't risk buying all those girly things until knowing for sure!

I am personally team green though for this pregnancy (FTM). :P Our nursery theme works for both genders so I'm totally fine with waiting. :) I have my 20 week scan next week and really hoping they don't just tell me and instead actually ask first if it's even visible.
  • Dd had her legs crossed for her ultrasound so the technician and Dr both said it was probably a girl, but they weren't 100% sure.

  • They should be able to do the genetic test to find out the sex. That is how I found at around 13 weeks. Very hig accuracy for it.
  • @ccarrozza1 We tried the Panorama at 16 weeks and got a "no result." Since we're not high risk, we decided the cost wasn't worth a second test for genetics or gender. :( We tried, though!

That stinks, did they even try to have you get up and walk around to get the baby moving?
  • @qtjo5 No! I read a few stories here about moving around or waiting a bit... the tech didn't suggest any of it. She wiggled the wand a bit trying to get the kid to move, I guess. But that was it. Bummer.

    Excited for a 3D, though!
  • I had an anatomy scan at 17 weeks 5 days (long storey my Dr is a bonehead) and then at 20 weeks 3 days and both times gender was unable yo be determined and me and my man along with family were really pumped tp find out but we were very happy to learn baby was healthy. I definitely understand your frustration. Mine is because my little dinosaur is stubborn and is laying breech facing my spine atm. We paid for the 100 gender determination scan at a separate clinic and she was 60% sure it's a little boy dino ♡. I have another app next Monday for them to give a better read but still it was my little man being stubborn and in the same position but with his foot in his crotch we got a few quick glimpses and he looks like a he to me lol. If you can afford it I would Def go for the separate scan. The lady that did mine was great and tried moving baby and it's a free charge for another app should they not be able to see gender or if they're not as sure as they'd like to be. I had a feeling baby was a boy and from what I saw I'm alot more sure lol. It all depends in the techs for the anatomy scans I find some are more diligent others seem lazy Imo my first one was great but babywas too small the second one was rushed abd the tech was rude so I happily forked out the 100$ to go somewhere more intimate where you get to see baby the whole time.
  • Oh and sorry for the mini novel lol
  • Ugh I feel for you! LOs legs were crossed when we went for our AS, but the tech let me get up and move around in hopes that baby would shift, and then she tried again. It worked and baby is a girl!

Definitely don't assume girl off a guess! I think going to a 3d place sounds like a great idea.

Twin B kept the umbilical cord between his legs at the 16 week scan. At the 20 week scan, before she began, the tech told us she thought we would have identical girls, but then he flashed his little nuts for 3 seconds.

Lurking from June but you have to tell the tech and doctor going in that you don't want to know otherwise they may blurt it out. I have had 3 where they could have been able to tell and I just politely told them not to let me know.

Mine asked as soon as we got in the room, but if yours doesn't, make sure you tell them that you're team green and don't want to know!! I've heard lots of stories of people getting told when they didn't want to know. Ours was even nice enough to turn the screen away when she was looking at the lower bits so we wouldn't accidentally see anything.
