Follow up ultrasound concerns

Today I had a follow up ultrasound because the tech couldn't a photo of all four chambers of the heart the first time. Went in and saw everything, although the tech spent a great deal of time focusing on the baby's foot (which we got a picture of). She told me everything looked normal, and sent me home with some photos.

When I got home I noticed that the baby's nose looked flat, and the photo of the foot showed a sizeable gap in between the big toe and the rest. I stupidly Googled these things, and found out those could be soft markers for Down's syndrome.

So I called my midwife. She said that anatomically speaking, baby was perfect, baby's nose could've been at a weird angle/been squished, (she has a nasal bone) and there is no way of telling me if she has a genetic disability because I didn't test for any.

So...I guess my question to you all would be, knowing none of us are experts, is how to deal with the anxiety I have about it. I have anxiety problems and xan go from 0-100 in a minute when it comes to worrying. Should I try to get screening done to see if I have an elevated chance of DS? Should I trust that of the tech was concerned, or saw signs, she would've told the midwife?

What would you do/feel in this situation? Thanks for any help/advice!

Re: Follow up ultrasound concerns

  • I think from the basic information you've given you may be working yourself up into an extreme amount of anxiety over something that you don't have enough information about. That doesn't seem healthy. For now take a deep breath and relax, you are far along in your pregnancy, these are very soft markers, everything else looks normal and you have been reassured by the tech and the midwife. In my non-medical opinion is very very very likely that you have nothing to worry about. Moving forward, maybe you want a little more information. It's not to late to do some genetic screening just to gather some information. What about doing a simple blood test screening? Verify Test or I think the other is called Panorama. These will screen for Downs and detect it in something like 95% of cases with just a blood draw from you. Take the test, get a negative result, enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Take the test, in the very unlikely event you get a positive result, find some other moms for support (your midwife can help), learn more about what your beautiful child will need, and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. The unknown makes me anxious, the known is easy for me no matter what it is. Maybe give yourself a few days, and if you can't relax then look into some of these tests. Good luck, don't worry.

  • Thanks so much, @henrytviii ! I felt so much better after your reply... I know that knowledge is power, and it's best to try to be proactive instead of just a nervous wreck. Thank you for the gentle reminder! ☺

  • I don't really have any advice but I'll be thinking and praying for you and baby! Hoping for the best!

  • I wouldn't put too much importance on a single picture which only captures a fraction of a moment compared to the ultrasound where they can look at everything for minutes at a time. Baby might have had their toes spread out at the time the picture was taken, the one of the nose could have been at a funny angle. The reason why your tech spent a lot of time looking at the foot is probably because they were having difficulty getting a good image of it, and baby might not have been cooperating. My anatomy scan took well over an hour because my baby spent the whole time in a scrunched ball - the tech described it As some sort of funny downward dog pose :)

If your tech said everything looked good then chances are everything is fine. If you think doing the screening blood tests will give you peace of mind then you can do that - just remember that they are screening tests, not diagnostic - they'll tell you whether your child is at high risk or low risk of a chromosomal abnormality.
  • Thank you again so much for your reassurance...I've been feeling much better about it this week!

  • If the radiologist noticed anything strange they would have referred you to your OBGYN.
