Hi Are you looking for pregnancy books? or baby books?
I'm a FTM too. So, I can't comment on practicality, but this is what I found informative. For pregnancy stuff, I mostly used the internet. For baby books, I've found it to be useful to think through some lifestyle choices before picking the books because the perspectives vary quite a lot. Like, are you planning on breastfeeding? Is it going to be exclusive? Are you going to be working soon after birth? Would you consider co-sleeping?
I also found that I overwhelmed myself trying to read too many books. I found it more useful to read the chapters that seemed most relevant.
I recommend these books that are attachment-parenting/breastfeeding/sleep-sharing centric:
The Baby Book by the Sears (very big but good basics, and a useful reference)
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by LLLI
Sweet Sleep by LLLI (don't buy if you're not willing to consider co-sleeping, eye-opening book otherwise with a wealth of scientific research citations)
I give a thumbs down to:
Happiest Baby on the Block by Karp (though many recommend it)
I also can't comment on what spouses may enjoy. I'm days away from my due date and DH hasn't read the bookmarked excerpts I asked him to months ago!
If you are interested in the science and statistics around pregnancy, check out Do Chocolate Lovers Have Sweeter Babies? and Expecting Better. They're very informative and well-written sources for debunking some of the common misconceptions about pregnancy.
when I got pregnant with my first my midwife gave me "what to expect when you are expecting". It was short reading by how far along you were as well as other information regarding things like testing done in pregnancy, nutrition and some recipes, info on labor and delivery etc. I referred to it often in my first and second pregnancies. After that time I pretty much had everything memorized!
The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy is a fun read. It's a compilation of real mom experiences coupled with registry advice. It's not scientific at all which is why I liked it. It's also relatively short so a fast easy read. The author is hilarious.
FTM as well. I ordered Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy and I love it! I had a copy of What to Expect... And find the Mayo Clinic book more helpful and easier to read. It's awesome.
