Baby's over 9 lbs delivered naturally or via c section ?!

My son was born in September 2011 and he was 9 lbs and 7 oz, baby Dr thinks this baby may be bigger ! I gave birth to my son naturally, I should have be c sectioned, the drs here kept telling me he would be between 7.5-8 lbs ... Any other mommys with big baby's ?!!

  • My first was 9lbs 1oz. I ended up getting an episiotomy and needing vacuum extraction but was able to deliver vaginally. Weight alone should not be the deciding factor for c-section. Especially since it is hard to predict.

  • My first was also 9 pounds 7 ounces! I delivered vaginally with the wonderful assistance of an epidural.

  • my first was 9 lb 1 oz. luckily after 3.5 hours in transition i did get the epidural and let them break my water. i didnt expect her to be that big and am glad i didnt push without medication! i did have 2nd degree tearing but it was fine. my siblings and i all were a lb bigger than the previous so I'm anxious to see how big this one will be!

  • DS was 9 lbs, 8 oz. His shoulder was stuck and it took me two brutal hours to push him out, but I was able to do it and I'm confident I can vaginally birth another big baby again if I need to. :) He was in a bad position, which made it much harder.

I would not want to get a c-section based off a doctor's prediction of weight. Judging from your own experience, it's clear that doctors can't predict weight accurately every time. It breaks my heart when a woman is told "your baby is 9 pounds" so she gets a c-section and finds out her baby is, in fact, only 6 or 7 pounds!
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • @amberrmariee20 why would they already think this ones going to be bigger? People don have big babies and then the next one is smaller. Happens all the time! Wondering why they would think that so early on. Their measurements aren't always correct either. I wouldn't want to have a c-section based off of the possible size.
  • My son was 10lbs 9 oz (2 weeks over due).... we had no idea he was so big till he was born. We had an induction which was straight forward and 2 hours pushing once fully dilated but he was back to back and wouldnt shift so we had to have a section. Im thinking of a VBAC with this pregnancy but going to wait and see how big this baby gets!
  • My friend had her first baby who was over 10 lbs naturally. and her second one was over 9 and a half. I can't remember their exact weights but big lil babies and they were both normal vaginal deliveries. They weren't natural in that she had an epidural. She tore with her first but not her second and both times her doctor knew they were big babies and wasn't worried about it.

My first was 7lb, 5 oz and my second was 6lb, 4 oz.  There is no reason to believe that just because you had one larger baby you are certain to have larger babies all the time.  It might be something that you think about at delivery time, but it shouldn't be a deciding factor.

This sounds similar to my first birth. My son was 10lbs 4oz and was stuck in my pelvis. I opted for a c-section with my second. It was much better. I'm having my 3rd c-section with this baby.

This. I've heard many stories where the doctor thinks the baby is HUGE and it ends up being several pounds smaller upon birth. I always say to myself that my body will not make a baby that's too big for me to give birth to! :) My mother had 11 children and her last child was 11 pounds 7 ounces (bless her soul). She had him vaginally with no troubles. Trust the process and your body, mama!
  • My first was 10 days late so I was induced. He ended up being 9lbs 5 oz. I didn't have any problems. But I do think the epidural saved me!!

They were 100% natural just not unmedicated. All birth is natural.

  • oh gosh I didn't mean to make is seem I thought they weren't normal births. I know a lot of people categorize natural as un-medicated without interventions, Just didn't want the OP to think that my friend had her big babies without the assistance of an epidural since I have no idea how it would have gone without intervention for her.
  • You know, as long as you're not laying on your back with your legs up you don't need a c-section because in that position you're forcing your cervix closed. Rarely do you NEED an episiotomy, as long as you don't rush through crowning. True macrosomia is rare and no doctor can agree on a cutoff weight.

  • 9 lb baby born at 39 weeks in 2013. I had episiotomy and 3rd degree tear. I was proud of myself! My bottom hurt for a while lol but I guess either your bottom will hurt or your abdomen if you decide to go that route... Up to you
  • My daughter was born at 39 weeks and she was 9lbs 3oz. Vaginal delivery.

I had GD with my first, she was born early at 37 weeks and was 9 lbs 4 oz, no epidural (it fell out and was ineffective), and she got stuck in the birth canal and it was 4 agonizing hours of pushing before she was finally born. DS was 8 days over due and was 9 lbs 8 oz, only 4 pushes and he was out lol :)

  • My son was 9lbs 3oz vaginal birth 1st degree tear. Quick and easy birth, painful even with epidural but I guess god gave me these big child bearing hips for a reason! Lol.
  • My 2nd son was 9 lb 1 oz. I had an episiotomy but otherwise the delivery was easy. Pushed through 3 contractions and he was out.
  • My son was 8lb2oz and was born via c-section because he was too big for MY birth canal. I stopped progressing at 6cm dilated. His face was also facing upwards instead of down (head was down). I'm very petite so his size was what caused my c-section. It's not always the case though. I know many people who have had 9-10+lbs babies and delivered vaginally.

  • @on_the_move I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I completely agree with what you said. I did have a typo in there that might have confused things. Lol it looked like I said you can't have a smaller baby after a big one and I definitely didn't mean that.
  • My second dd was 9lbs. Vaginal delivery and I wish more than anything I had a c-section with her. I need pelvic floor surgery from all of the damage she did, but of course she was worth it.
  • I had my son vaginally, but they had to cut me, and it took approx 2 hours to push him out because he was stuck and wouldn't turn for the Dr ... The Dr broke his left collar bone and gave him nerve damage up the left side of his upper body and neck ( which ended up being temporary ) thank god ! My Dr is just concerned if this baby's bigger I might have more complications !! Thanks for all the positive feedback (: ! Glad I'm not the only one with big babies !
  • My first was 9lbs 1 oz, took over an hour of pushing (doc was way off on size estimate) and I ended up w/ a small tear.  My second was 8lbs 14oz and the delivery was super smooth.  3 pushes and she was here with no tearing.
  • I'm hoping this baby is going to be a bit smaller ! And hopefully I'll have a quick labor ! With my son my water broke at about 3 am, I had him by 11:27 am ! So 8.5 hours in labor !
