2nd Trimester

Pregnant and in College advice!

Hi! I'm 26 and barely 14 weeks pregnant.I just want some reassuring advice from anyone who has been pregnant and been in college. I don't know if pregnancy will hinder me in anyway since this is my first. I'm only taking 12 hours. Physics, Precalculus, and Geology: Energy Resources. I am excited for my baby to be learning with me at the same time, but also worried about the whole semester ahead of me. Especially since I will hit third trimester right around finals.

Re: Pregnant and in College advice!

  • I was pregnant with my first in college.
My best advice is don't take ceramics. Def failed that one...

Drink lots of water. Don't be afraid to be late to class. Take your time. Teachers are surprisingly understanding (as long as you make an effort of course.) Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask about what the department can do for YOU. There are a lot of medical clauses that have to do with your grades, missing class for appointments, etc. I had no idea - my Spanish teacher asked for me and I gained a whole letter grade for nothing.

I almost wore myself out because I was in the wind ensemble. I wasn't going to let pregnancy stand in the way of my only chance at first chair clarinet! I'm glad I took all the advice people gave me. I played an awesome concert, left for Thanksgiving break, had a baby, and came back to take finals! It was a crazy time, and it's going to be hard, but you'll look back on it and feel like a bad ass. ;)

    Good luck!

  • I'm in my last semester of my undergraduate degree and will be having my baby right around finals (due date April 21, last day of exams is the 25). If you got through first trimester exhaustion, you've got this!
I second the idea of talking to your department or academic advising and your professors. My professors have been very nice and have agreed to let me have exam accommodations, which in my case means writing early. I also met with counseling services at my university who had said they would help me get the accommodations I needed if my profs weren't willing to make changes, though that didn't end up being an issue in any way.
Things can be kind of crazy trying to plan for my coursework this semester, graduation, and my baby all at once but it's also been kind of a cool experience so far. Best of luck to you!

    Anniversary

  • I'll be graduating in December and definitely anxious about having an infant and my senior semester. Don't be afraid to ask for help. I'm going to seriously rely on my SO and family! Going to be hard work but we'll worth it in the end.
  • Unless you have medical problems, I wouldn't think college would be terribly difficult. 12 hours of school is a lot less than 40 hours of work.

    Are you also working?

Do your best, be on time, do the work. Lots of women study while pregnant.
  • its ok girl I'm in college right now to finishing up my last semester ;) I'm 16 weeks and take mini naps in the library sofas there so comfy!
  • I too was pregnant with my first while in college.  It was just fine.  The school cafeteria was my fave place to stop before classes.  The lunch ladies knew me and would ask me "what today honey...chicken tenders, burger, or steak hoagie"  It was my big decision of the day.  My teachers were great with bathroom breaks and me eating in class!  I too was excited he was learning with me.  He still seems very smart and we always laugh that its because he went to college already!
  • I'm 20 weeks and 4 days I think, my semester starts next week. I'm only taking 1 class twice a week but I also have a full time job, so I'm looking forward to giving this a try. My finals are going to be while I'm still in the 8th month so hopefully into won't be so bad. Goodluck and just remember not to let things stress you out.
  • Try to plan ahead and let your adviser know that you need some online courses (most colleges have them available for some gen-ed type courses), so that you don't have to worry about feeling poorly and getting around campus. Going part time would be good too, if you work and go to school.

I never could have predicted at 14 weeks just how sick with HG I would be for the entire pregnancy, you can't predict these kinds of things. So please, allow yourself time to be pregnant and don't over do it!

I actually switched to University of MD's online college campus when I was about 18 weeks along, because I knew working 40+ hours in IT plus school, plus a baby on the way, was not getting done the traditional 'on campus' way.
