FTM need help,labor questions

Can I go into labor even if my water hasn't broken or if I'm not dialated ?
Last night I was having cramping coming and going and my lower back was hurting. I'm 36 weeks and 6 days pregnant and I'm nervous that I won't recognize the signs of labor telling me to go to the hospital . Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated thanks

  • When you are in labor you will know it!  It won't feel crampy and they will be regular and in a defined pattern.  Most people's labor doesn't start off with water breaking, although some do.  It is likely that what you were experiencing last night will help your body get ready.

My doctor explains labor contractions as those that will stop you from speaking. Water breaking is generally not the first sign as many women need to have their water broken or it breaks after they are at the hospital.

Agree with PP- you will likely know when you are in labor.
  • With labor pains you will want to go to the hospital ;)
  • ^^ lol thank you
  • You'll have a lot of pains leading up to active labour, that's for sure. Your water might break and that tends to speed contractions up but generally, your belly muscles contracting to the point of taking your breath away and you needing to use breathing techniques you've learned in whatever birth class you've decided to take - time those with an app and you'll know when to head to the hospital.
  • So, my labor began with diarrhea(tmi sorry). It felt like bad menstrual cramps that lasted 1 minute at a time. Mine went all day long and never got consistent. I had some friends tell me I wasn't in labor but I was. I had horrible discharge that increased all day. My water broke in my bed but my contractions were never consistantly 5 minutes apart. Even at hospital and during pushing they never got regular. I knew I was in labor because even though they were regular they did come all day.
