Overseas Assignment notification

A little background....i have been in the Army for over 15 years and this is my first child. I have never been stationed overseas despite my efforts to be stationed overseas( but i have deployed for the war on terrorism three times). I called branch and they informed me that my next duty station will be Korea....but they know im pregnant and will not move me until my child is a year old. Oh and btw....we arent currently doing command sponsorship so you wont be able to take ur family...so you mean to tell me....that after 15 years of me trying to get Korea as a duty station....you assholes wait until im pregnant and NOW im suddenly perfect for an assignment overseas where i cant take my child....seriously debating walking away from a retirement because of this....

Re: Overseas Assignment notification

  • First I just want to say thank you so much for your service and the sacrifices you make everyday so that we can feel safe. I'm so grateful and thankful for you.
I don't know what advice I can give except to do what is best for you and your little one and family. You have devoted over a decade to this country and for that you should be proud. Thank you and God bless you.

  • That's a crappy situation.  A lot can change in a year though, especially in the military.  I suggest talking to command about your concerns, it may mean passing up promotions, also exploring early retirement is an option.

  • 15 years. That is unbelievable. Seriously, thank you for your service. I cannot believe what a shit situation you're in.

Is there a chance that 15 months from now you WILL be able to bring your child? How long will you be stationed there?

Is there any way for you to get out of this aside from leaving the army?

After 15 years of loyalty, I cannot imagine they would make you choose between your 1 year old child or retirement (well, that's not true. Sadly, I can believe it. I Just wish it wasn't that way).

This is so beyond horrible. I truly cannot imagine.
  • Almost 17 years ago I joined the Army. It was one if the best decisions I have ever made and one that I will never regret.

When we sign an enlistment contract, or a reenlistment contract and raise our hand to swear an oath, we are well aware of the risks we are taking and the sacrifices we are making.

We have zero control over where we are stationed or when and where we get deployed.

One thing that is completely clear is that we will, at one point or another, be separated from our families for any length of time and for many reasons.

It is very sad that a new mother may be forced to leave a child because the Army orders her to but that is our job.

I had to leave my 4 month old son for 4 months to reclass and when I got back he didn't remember me.

At least now there is skype or facetime.

A lot could change between now and the time you PCS. I hope that you can get an assignment that you are able to bring your son to.

I'm sorry that I don't have any advice.
  • Its cool...i just really needed to vent. I will figure something out...
  • That's soooo frustrating! I hope things get figured out and or your assignment changes!
