GTKY: Plans edition

Just seeing if you've made any plans yet now that we're all about half way through or close.

Baby shower plans, nursery plans, shopping plans, maternity leave plans, childcare plans, you know... all the fun necessities and what not...

So, what are your plans?! :)

Re: GTKY: Plans edition

  • I hate making plans. I'm a wing-it type of person.

I'm not handling anything with baby shower. My mom and MIL are doing all that stuff...I think they'll do it in April/May timeframe. The nursery is still a big debate. I can't figure out what i'm happy with, or what will look good together.  It's annoying the piss out of me. I already got one can of paint, but I don't know if I'm happy with it. Now that we know it's a boy, I just might go with blue and have chevron print accents and stuff. ( I love chevrons... ) The only thing is, the trim in our house is wood with a reddish stain on it. I'm not sure how that'll look together?! Shopping happens as it happens. I got a stroller and some clothes. I'd really like to get the car seat out of the way and then I'll leave the rest for the shower to see what happens. I'm probably not going to do maternity leave until I go into labor....childcare we're screwed on...IDK what else?! So many plans to be made!

  • My sister-in-law offered to throw me a shower. I know I need to work on a guest list

Child care. Found a small day care I like. On a wait list. Need to find other places for back up

Haven't started on the nursery or bought any furniture. Have thrown around a few ideas on layout but that could change depending on what furniture I end up with

Maternity leave. Definitely taking 12 weeks. Husband is taking 2 weeks
  • I already have loads as this is baby number 3 but it's my first boy so I've bought some new nursery bedding, a few clothes, a stuffed dog and one pack of newborn nappies- a bit random!! I need to sort out the nursery as my daughters share a room so we turned it into a home office instead. I plan on starting... At some point lol. I'm going on maternity leave at 35 weeks, can't wait as I'm so exhausted with being pregnant and working and having two little ones. I haven't got my pram yet as its a double so huge and don't want to have to store it yet- planning on keeping it in the boot of the massive family car we will be buying in the next few months x
  • We find out tomorrow hopefully if we have a little Paul or Ella coming, then that really sets the ball in motion. I'm going with a vintage circus theme for the nursery (think "water for elephants" not Fisher price). We're going to go crazy registering this weekend!
I'm planning on quitting when baby comes and taking a few months off, then finding a part time job. I know I'm one of those mamas who does better with some "time off".
My mom and MIL are hosting the shower so I guess I'll just be showing up!
All I've gotten is a few pairs of baby leggings/pants in neutral colors, some crib sheets and a blanket. Oh and the pack N play I wanted because it was 50% off!
  • I really haven't made any plans because plans never seem to work out the way you want them to.

The childcare plan isn't much of a plan, it's just something my boyfriend and I discussed early on when we met. He's always wanted to be a stay at home dad. Which I'm cool with, so that's that.

And I wasn't planning on a baby shower because even if it wasn't considered 'tacky' to plan your own, I wouldn't have because making plans for anything stresses me out.

But when I told a friend of mine I was pregnant, she and her daughter asked me if they could throw me one and I thought it was a lovely gesture so I said yes.

Curious how it works for you because I've considered 12 weeks also.  Are you using any vacation time? Our FMLA gives us 12 weeks, and I get 13 days PTO. I've already used 5 days due to a cold and the flu and I have a week of vacation scheduled in May. I'm worried about what'll happen if  I need days off after I return from maternity leave to care of the baby. How does it work for you, or are you saving vacation time?
  • @sekomides - score on the pack and play! I need to find one of those also.  Funny thing, the first thing the popped in my head before I even finished reading what you said for circus theme was Water for elephants. That will be awesome!!!

@koalaknuckles - Precisely why I hate making plans too! NEVER fails that they don't work out! I get what you mean about the baby shower thing too. I don't really even want one. I remember my bridal shower was so awkward, or atleast... I felt awkward. I don't know why. But between my fam and DHs fam I knew I wasn't going to win the battle of not having one. Oh well, like you said, atleast I don't have to stress over it. LOL! That's way cool of your SO to do the stay at home dad thing, too!

  • @ipumpkin I think the one I got is called night2day? It has a freakin bassinet that has an additional stand, it basically the greatest invention ever. So for $130 I got a playpen and a bassinet for our room, plus a whole "nursery on the go" for up at the cabin. And it's grey.

I am using all of my vacation time. I am fortunate to have senority at my job as well as to work at a place where leave can carry over from year to year until you max out. I should have enough vacation for around 8 weeks full pay. Short term disability will cover the rest at 60% pay. My husband only gets 3 weeks vacation per year and it doesn't roll over so he is only taking 2 weeks for that reason

that's exactly what I want! The all-in-one type thing!! Where did you find that at such a good price!? Need it! lol
  • Baby shower plans: my sister in law offered to throw me one and we decided to have it before the baby arrives, but that's all that is planned so far.

Nursery plans: the nursery has been painted and the furniture is up. I also bought a rug, so I guess all that's left is figuring out curtains, decorations, organization, etc. and I probably want to add a bookcase too.

Shopping plans: nothing planned really... May buy a few more essentials if there are good sales, but I'm going to try to limit myself on purchases until after the shower.

Maternity leave plans: need to finalize this. I would like to take all 12 weeks, but that would put me back to work in mid-October which gets to be quite a busy time at work. I may think about taking 10 weeks off and then come back part time for a couple weeks. Leaning toward taking all 12 weeks if we can afford it (part of it will be unpaid after std and pto/sick leave runs out). Still need to decide for sure.

Childcare plans: we have daycare lined up at an in home provider. She is actually a distant relative and several of my friends take their kids there, so I am feeling comfortable with our choice.

Amazon Open Box Warehouse. Just scour the site..... Its insane what they give away.
  • Thanks! Heading over there now!
  • I am switching to an entirely new midwife and DH and I will be meeting her this Friday for the first time.  Other than that, I don't have any need for plans since this is LO#5 and the third girl in a row.  We are pretty set for everything.  The only real to-do on my list is figure out her name...which is proving rather difficult for us :P

  • No baby shower plans yet - no one has offered to throw one so I really don't know what to do about that. :/ We're first time parents so we have nothing, and it would be really great to have the shower to get some of the stuff that we need.

For the nursery I am thinking of doing kind of a woodland/wilderness/Pixar's UP theme. I found a lot of cool things on Pinterest to do a gender neutral wilderness theme, which I really love since we could reuse stuff for future babies. I haven't actually gotten anything started on it at all (the room is currently DH's office as he works from home), but I think I'll start if it ever starts getting warmer.

Maternity leave is a mess. Since I'm a teacher and I'm due in the summer, I basically get no maternity leave. I get 6 weeks from the date of the birth as unpaid leave, but I can apply my sick days to it. If I give birth on time that only gets me leave for the week of teacher workdays before school starts, so that's definitely not happening. I'm not showing up on the first day of school with no prep work done! Since I am due in the summer I am allowed to use 6 weeks of FMLA at the beginning of the school year, but it's unpaid and I can't apply my sick leave to it. So, right now my plan is to come and work the week of teacher workdays to get everything prepped for the year and get my long term sub up to speed, and then spend the first 6 weeks of the school year on FMLA leave. Not ideal, but at least it gets me some additional time with my bubs. Provided they approve it.

We have a favorite day care center picked out and we're on the list for it, but we still need to look into some other ones as backups. We're actually going to try and see if DH can handle working from home and taking care of the bubs to see if we can hold off on starting day care, but that part is up in the air for now.

Ugh, I hate planning things. I'm a wing-it girl too.
  • @asherk

Sounds complicated, I hope it all works out and everything falls into place in the best interest of you! That would be great if your H could handle taking care of the baby so you don't need to do daycare!

  • @ipumpkin fingers crossed!! my plan was always to take time off when i started having kids so that i could be done with having babies and get them all started in school before i went back, but next year would be my 5th year teaching in a socioeconomically disadvantaged school so i will be eligible for student loan forgiveness. and i get my tenure after next year too (unless they slash those benefits, which they're considering doing in my district), so it's worth it to stick it out. i already get jealous that DH gets to stay at home with the dog all day; i bet it'll be even worse when the baby comes around! :)
  • Baby shower will be Memorial Day weekend...hoping that we will move to texas right after the baby is born so no childcare plans...I'm at teacher so maternity leave hits during my summer break which is cool.
  • Our nursery is about 90% done. I'm finished registering & will have a shower in June. I plan to take all 12 weeks of maternity leave (still need to fill out HR paperwork). My in-laws will be keeping my baby when I go back to work. Those are the only plans I have for now.
