When to Pump

I am breastfeeding and would like to pump once a day to get some milk in the freezer so that maybe I can be away from DD for a few hours. My delimna is when to pump.

With DS, he only ever ate from one side at a feeding so I pumped the other side first thing in the morning. He slept long stretches at night very early on so that side really needed to be emptied anyway.

With DD, though, she nurses on both sides and eats every 2.5-3 hours at night still. I feel like there is never a buildup that she isn't about to eat. The other issue is that with a newborn and two year old, sitting still to pump while they are awake is challenging. Plus in the morning they both get up near the same time so the first hour or two is craziness. I tried doing it last night right after bedtime but only got two ounces because it hadn't been long since she ate.

Any suggestions on when a good time to pump would be?

Re: When to Pump

  • The recommendation was right after baby eats to an hour after. 2 oz isn't a bad yield then (most of a feeding even). You might also consider a hands free chassis. Won't help with the stationary, but it will give you hands to use.

Ideally, pumping after your first morning session will yield the most, although that may be tough with your situation.
Like PP said 2 oz after a feeding is actually really good! I wouldn't worry if you only pump 2 oz a day on top of your feeding sessions - that's great!
