brown spotting

Hi ladies. I'm about 13 weeks pregnant. Today I felt a weird twinge in my lower abdomen (nothing scary since I've been feeling ligament stretches lately), but when I wiped after peeing, I noticed some brownish spotting. I wiped again and noticed a little more. Unfortunately dr is out today, but nurse told me not to worry unless the blood was bright red and/or if I had cramps. I've been lying down since then and have peed twice since, and no more spotting. I'm still very worried though! Anyone else experience this?

Re: brown spotting

  • I'm not a doctor obviously but brown blood is old blood so I wouldn't worry unless it's bright red. Good luck, I really hope it's nothing!!!

  • I had brown spotting for weeks 8-10. At my last appt the doctor ordered an early ultrasound just to make sure everything was ok which it was. Maybe you want to call the doctor when their in to see if they want you to come in.
  • Yup that sounds like a good idea. Definitely going to try to get seen tomorrow just to be sure. Thank you!
  • could it be vaginal discharge? I saw that is a symptom starting at week 10 on one of the guides in this app.
  • I had brown and told my OB yesterday and he said it was normal. I also told him about the bright red I had that lasted like 3 wipes he wasn't too concerned. He said if their is cramping that goes along with it than get checked out. But honestly hun if you are ever concerned go get checked out.
  • I had some a few weeks ago but it was all fine. Go to the doctor if it will make you feel better! I have known a few ppl that still had some periods during pregnancy, may just depend on your body.
  • Happened to me this week too and with my other two pregnancies. As mentioned, brown blood usually isn't cause for concern. However, try telling our runaway brains that!!! My doc sent me for an ultrasound the same day and things were okay. Peace of mind helped. It's about a week later and still spontaneously happens but I'm trying to just move forward and not stress. Hang in there...good job laying down and taking care of YOU. Best of luck :)
  • Thank you, ladies. Unfortunately my dr is out until next week X( I've gone about 4 hours with no spotting anymore. Just went to the bathroom and had just a tiny bit, brown again. No more after the 2nd wipe. This is my 3rd pregnancy and never had this happen before. I am the worst (or best) worrier! I need to hear more success stories, keep them coming!
  • Unfortunately it's normal Some will get it some people don't like your nurse said unless it's bright red you have nothing to worry about most of the time it's just left over menstrual blood and also the baby attaching too uterus wall no worries I also has the same problem with my first child almost about four months but after seeing my doctor he explained to me what the cause was you baby is just permanently settling in now don't worry your little head
  • I've been reading some good articles that have eased my mind.....a little. Then I see others that say to call the dr right away. Blegh. I wish my dr was in this week :-q
  • I never spotted at all with my first pregnancy 6 years ago. This time, I have spotted on and off since week 7. I'm still spotting brown. One day it was bright red, but only enough for two liners. I was cramping a bit though, so they told me to come on in, and everything was fine. He said that sometimes there truly is no direct explanation for experiences like mine. I hope this helps ease your mind. Take care.
  • I had some very minimal brown spotting almost two weeks ago at twelve weeks, my nurse's reaction was "pelvic rest, call back if it's still happening after forty eight hours, and spotting is common until twenty weeks." She was so sweet and reassuring.

I'm still a little nervous for my appointment next week, but I'm sure everything is fine. I've had no reasons to think otherwise. The spotting lined up perfectly with when I would've expected my third missed period. It's still apparently relatively common to have a little spotting coinsiding with your missed periods at weeks four, eight, and twelve. That's what we think it was.
  • Have you had sex recently?? I tend to spot pink and or brown after sex.
I have also randomly spotted since week 6. It isn't every single day, but probably at least 3-4 days a week!

I've started thinking of it as a sign things are going okay-- after being cleared by doc, of course. I haven't had many symptoms and I sure didn't spot before being preg!

As others have said, unless you have terrible cramps or enough blood to fill a pad an hour do you best not to worry!!

    Thoughts and prayers!
  • My husband and I did have "adult time" 2 nights ago.im definitely taking that into consideration...maybe just a little bit of irritation caused my that. I guess I figured spitting would've happened the very next day, not 2 days later. I really appreciate everyone's support and stories. It's very reassuring to hear I'm not the only one!
  • Spotting, not Spitting lol

Accidentally clicked on this from September 2013. I had spotting at 5 weeks and again at 8 weeks. Brown but lasted a day or 2 each time. I was freaked out and even went to the er. The rest of my pregnancy was completely normal and I now have a beautiful almost 18 month old son. I'll never forget that scare though. Prayers.

I called my ob when I was only 6 weeks and she said that spotting up to three days after sex was normal! Maybe that will help put your mind at ease!
  • Thank you Thank you thank you! :x
  • So I made it through the night! I had a tiny bit of brown discharge at night then a tiny bit this morning, but peed several times before and after then and tissue is wiping clean (sorry TMI). Any more positive experiences?
  • I have had brown spotting 2 days after sex as well. My doctor said it's normal!
  • At 12 wks 4dys I woke up spotting, it was at first red and then went to brown, by the 2nd day it had pretty much cleared up. I freaked when I saw red so I called my OB, but he is out till the weekend, so I called my family doctor instead. He told me red is active bleeding, brown is old and to rest, do absolutely nothing but keep monitoring it. I went in for an u/s on the 2nd day, (I'm a worrier, so I had to have one) and baby is fine, the u/s tech told me it could still be implantation bleeding because I'm still within the first 12 weeks, it could also be due to sex. Today I got up and spotting red again, but I'm trying not to get anxious as they cleared me yesterday. Hope this helps
  • Ugh I share your worry/pain, FordJo. I just got an order from the nurse for an U/S since I explained to her I couldn't wait for my dr to get back. I'm in the waiting room now, praying for the best. I will send happy thoughts/prayers your way, as welll. I guess even if we see that everything is fine, we can't help but worry if things don't go perfectly by the book!
  • After "adult time" with my hubby I had MAJOR bleeding - both pregnancies. Then I have brown for weeks after. I always get put on pelvic rest first trimester. The reasoning is that as your blood increases the blood vessels in your cervix have a little trouble carrying the weight - very normal! I've been on pelvic rest and had a happy dream and wound up brown spotting after it! Lol so don't stress!!
  • Lol happy dream, I love it! We'll I just came back from U/S. Soooo relieved to see the little one wiggling around, kicking and staring at his hands. Heart was bearing and all measurements looked good. But since it wasn't my regular dr, I have to wait until the results get faxed to my dr so that my dr can share any news with me. Will take 2-3 days. Oh for the love of God! ~X( I do feel better seeing the little one, though, . Whew!

That was me last night major bleeding after sex...it's drying up but noone is concerned, no clots, pain and it happened with sex...
  • I hope it all comes back as good news. My dr won't be in until Tuesday, but my u/s tech assured me baby is fine and even told me look baby is kicking!! I was in disbelief so I asked kicking?? She said yes and showed me again. It's just the relaxing part and parying and hoping I don't do anything that would hurt the baby.
Sending thoughts and prayers your way @martruby
  • Well...nurse called and told me u/s looked fine. Something about the way she said it, though , made me question her over and over and made her swear she wasn't lying LOL. This is my 3rd pregnancy, and for some reason, I'm soooo worried about this one. Maybe it's my age (35), but I can't seem to shake the fears.
