October 2015 Moms

Disappointed..

So my first prenatal visit with the OB was today... We met with the nurse about 10 days ago just for bloodwork and medical history. So, the doctor comes in, chats with me and then tells me to get undressed. I asked if I was having an ultrasound today, and she said no, not until 20 weeks....? What?

I had so much anxiety driving to this appointment. I was just hoping some of my fears would have subsided after the appointment, and it's the exact opposite. I'm even more terrified now.

All she did was a pelvic exam and said my uterus "feels like" I'm 8 weeks. Was that supposed to be reassuring? I'm seeing other October mommies posting their ultrasound and they are obviously not 20 weeks yet, so this can't be normal for a first ultrasound, can it?

I had another OB appointment scheduled for tomorrow, as I hadn't decided where I wanted to deliver yet, and had forgotten about it. They called me today to confirm, and being all angry after my first visit, asked what was going to happen at this visit. She didn't say that I would hear or see the baby, so I asked when that doctor would do my first ultrasound, and she said 20 weeks!

I was going to just switch to a new OB (some other questionable things happened during my visit), but is everyone going to tell me the same thing? I feel like I'm in the twilight zone...

My first appt at 8w4d was ultrasound to confirm and date first then met with the nurse practitioner to answer any questions. Only got undressed for the ultrasound. I will meet with my doc at 12 weeks.

    Okay. That's weird!
I get an ultrasound at 9-10 weeks to get a better idea of due date and then they do testing at 13 weeks(I think) for genetic testing for any issues. A lot of people choose not to do this one. then, I have the 20 week one. I thought I had less than others, but was fine with it.
I wouldn't be okay with that either and I'm not really a worrier or bothered by these things.
  • I got an ultrasound at 7.5 weeks to confirm. Will get another around 11.5 weeks as part of the FTS and then a final between 18-20 weeks. This is the same setup I had with a different ob when I delivered my son 2.5 years ago. I know different practices do things differently, but it seems odd to only have the one... I mean, how else do they confirm that baby, sac, etc are all where they're supposed to be and well? Don't mean to freak you out or anything, but I might check with a few other doctors for sanity's sake
  • Idk if they're not doing it because I conceived using an IUI, so we know conception date?
  • I think it's common practice to only get one ultrasound and that's at 20 weeks. Unless you're getting a test NT test, then you would get one between 11-14 weeks.
  • Should be noted, my wife and I did the IUI at home, and were not using a fertility doctor who probably would have done an ultrasound to confirm?

But I'm happy to know Im not crazy. I'm going to call around tomorrow to find another doctor.
  • this is standard practice where I am. unless you do additional testing, you only get the ultrasound for anatomy scan at half way. if you want the extra ultrasounds definitely find another but just know that office isn't out of line.

  • I'm having my first sonogram on Wednesday. They said they will confirm how far along I am with that. My first appointment they did blood work and a pelvic exam, that was last Wednesday. According to the calendar I'm 6wks 2 days, but will see with the sonogram... That's really weird they are waiting until 20 weeks...
  • My doctor's office (and most offices from what I understand) will do a transvaginal ultrasound at every appointment.  Usually, you get at least one abdominal scan at 20 weeks to make sure everything is developing correctly and to measure, etc.  Unless your doctor does a TV ultrasound at each of your appointments, he/she can not confirm the pregnancy is even viable.  Which means you won't feel at ease until 20 weeks.  You shouldn't have to wait this long to see/hear your baby and get the reassurance you need.
  • Its surprising you are not at least having a NT test at 12 weeks - I thought that was pretty standard?

  • That's normal. Early u/s aren't usually done unless there is something potentially wrong with the pregnancy. There isn't any reason to do them early if everything is going smoothly.

  • I had my first u/s today. I thought I was 11 weeks but I'm only 7. I did see that my office only does one definite one around 20 weeks unless the doctor orders another one. They did the one today just because I wasn't really sure how far along I was. So i guess, that's not unusual to do the first at 20 weeks.
  • With all 5 of my pregnancies I've had what my OB calls a dating u/s at around 8 weeks to measure baby & verify the due date. Then I don't get another until 20 weeks. I'm used to getting that early one so it would drive me nuts to have to wait until 20 weeks!
  • I'm 8 weeks and I won't get my first ultra sound until 11 weeks then another at 20 weeks. I am almost considering switching doctors so I won't have to wait as long to hear the heart beat. The nurse also told me they aren't required to tell me the sex of the baby since it's really not part of the check up (at 20 weeks) and it's up to the tech at the time.
  • This probably is not politically correct but if you say you are having some
Cramping on one side and you are concerned they will send you for an ultrasound.
  • That's weird. You should at least be offered a nuchal translucency ultra sound at 13 weeks.
  • It's not weird it's just their policy. I talked to my OB today and she said first ultra sound will be between 18-22 weeks. They do a second one a few weeks before delivery to verify baby's exact position. With my first pregnancy I think I had an earlier one, but for some reason can't remember why....
  • My office's official policy says ultrasound at 20 weeks - that's apparently what insurance will pay for with a pregnancy with no complications.

BUT...the OB nurse practitioner said if I had any symptoms like bleeding or cramping, they will submit it and do the ultrasound. She sort of said it with a wink...I had (very) slight cramping so I got my ultrasound at 7w5d.

I got the impression they just needed an excuse to work around the insurance companies.
  • Our doctor did an "off the books" TV ultrasound today at 8 weeks. But she was sure to state that it was unofficial, and she can only do it until they find out she is not charging. I know all of my friends that live here (Indiana) have all had to wait until 20 weeks for their first, as long as everything was normal. I was SO excited to see our baby today, so I totally understand not wanting to wait!

That is so weird I'm have my first ultrasound at 8 wks I'm already scheduled for that. I say you should just look for another OB.
  • I think it may depend on insurance company practices in whatever state you live in. I had dating ultrasounds at my intial OB appointments with both my son and with this baby. I didn't have an ultrasound with my angel till I went to the ER for bleeding, because I still hadn't been to the OB yet. With this baby, I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks because I went in for spotting, fearing another miscarriage.

With my son, I had u/s at 13-ish weeks for NT then 19 weeks for anatomy scan then about a month later because they wanted to make sure I didn't have placenta previa.

This time, I'm anticipating an ultrasound a little after 12 weeks for NT screening and around 20 for the anatomy scan. Not sure if they do any others after that.

I live in VA and I've been to two different OB practices.

Anyone else in VA? Did you get a dating u/s at 8-10 weeks?
