Blood test at first appointment

I finally had my first appointment! My doctor ordered a blood test but she didn't request an HCG count. I miscarried last time and of course they were testing me over and over for HCG numbers (to see if they were rising or dropping). I guess I assumed it was something they checked with all pregnancies, but is it common to not get a blood test or check the HCG count for a healthy pregnancy? Did anyone else even have to get a blood test at their first appointment? I think she is testing my thyroid and for certan viruses.

Re: Blood test at first appointment

  • I didn't have a blood test at my first appointment which I thought was weird because it seems everyone else is getting blood drawn.

I had a blood test at mine.   My doctor didn't talk about testing HCG levels but I assume they are checking for several other things as well.

Most common things they test for are:
    • Blood Group
    • Rh factor (- or +)
    • antibody screening
    • Complete blood count
    • Rubella (German measles) immunity
    • Hepatitis B testing
    • Syphilis screening
    • HIV testing
