Baby Names

are these names /too/ offbeat? bring your brutal honesty.

I wish I could predict the future
I wonder if some of the more 'offbeat' names will be common place in the future?

Anyways, heres a list of 'risky' names I adore, but am unsure of. There are two safe names in my girl list, I wanted to know what you guys thought!

Girl:
Farris
Eowyn
Sariah
Capella
Astrid
Ophelia
Ramona -safe-
Alice -safe-

Boy:
Finn
Atlas
Orion
Farron
Gannon
Beorn

Re: are these names /too/ offbeat? bring your brutal honesty.

  • Girl:
Farris -- sounds boy to me
    Eowyn -- never have liked
Sariah -- looks like Sarah or Sarai has been mispelled
Capella -- least unlikable of the offbeat bunch, but that's not saying much.  Prefer Calliope
    Astrid -- LOVE
Ophelia -- can't stop thinking about the character in Hamlet
    Ramona -- never have liked
    Alice -- classic and timeless

    Boy:
Finn -- love it as a nickname for the offbeat Finnbar
Atlas -- Shrugged? feels like a muscle man to me
Orion -- there is something I just don't like about it, but it's not terrible
Farron -- sounds like a girl to me (I have only ever known girls named Farron)
    Gannon -- LOVE!
Beorn -- looks like Bjorn has been misspelled

  • I was just thinking today that Eowyn is such a pretty name, but I could never use it because it just seems to fandom to me. I really do think it's beautiful, bit people would always be like, oh you must really love LOTR huh? However, if that doesn't bother you I say go for it!
  • LOVE Ophelia!!!!
do not like any of the other names, boy or girl.
  • Girls: I love Astrid, Ophelia, and Alice. Not a fan of the rest. Consider Octavia, Astraea, Hero, Winter, Elowen, Freya, Alastriona.

Boys: I love Finn, Atlas, and Orion. Not a fan of the rest. Consider Aeneas, Flynn, Lucian, Alasdair, Gawain, Boaz, Hamish.

    Pretty much all of this.

  • I like Ramona and Orion or Finn.
  • You've got some good options. I must admit to loving Eowyn in a very gp kind of way. I agree with pp suggestion of Elowen. Honestly though if I met an Eowyn I would think it was kind of awesome. I also like Astrid, Ramona and Alice. The rest of your girl names I don't care for.

Of your boy names I really only love Orion. I am assuming Beorn is after the shape shifter in The Hobbit, a fine character but a little too much imo. Other suggestions:

    Lysander
    Aurelius
    Bartholomew
    Thaddeus
    Hector
    Peregrine
    Crispin
    Ewan

    Good luck!

  • I like Farris and Astrid. Astrid more. I would also suggest Ingrid.
For boys, Beorn is tough because of the very popular Baby Bjorn brand. I like Farren the best of your boy list.
  • Thanks for the input guys.
I didnt realize Farris was considered masculine, after a bit of research I noted its mostly used for boys. I feel like its a pretty dainty name for a boy.
I got more positive responses on the names I thought I wouldnt though.
    Thanks again !
  • Not a fan of any, sorry
  • I consider Astrid, Ophelia, Ramona, and Alice all good choices. Finn, Atlas, and Orion are not "out there" either. You may like Oceana, I just saw that one the other day and like it more than Ophelia.

Alice and Finn are already gaining popularity.

I don't like the other choices for various reasons. Eowyn is an obvious LOTR reference and I hate that.

  • Things do not end well for poor Ophelia in Hamlet, which kind of ruins the name for me. Kind of the same with Astrid in White Oleander... Also, come to think of it, Jan named her baby Astrid on The Office. In fiction, it seems to be a name associated with daughters of dysfunctional mothers.

I like Finn for a boy though.
  • Farris...as in the Day Off
Eowyn - can't judge, not familiar
    Sariah - ??
    Capella...as in singing without instruments
Astrid...I hear this and see a French cartoon
Ophelia - beautiful! Wish it didn't have the awful story. But gorgeous.
    Ramona - pretty
    Alice - prettier

    Boy:
    Finn - fine
    Atlas - very cool
    Orion - pretty cool
Farron - I hear Sharon with a speech impediment
Gannon - a surname. And canon with a cold.
Beorn - cool. Is this a legit spelling?

  • Farris- not a fan

Eowyn- actually know one and everyone has trouble pronouncing it

Sariah- not sure how to pronounce that either

    Astrid- not bad

    Ophelia- love this!

    Ramona- Like this

Alice- Cute, but yes kind of safe...still not common

Finn- More common than most on your list, it's okay

    Atlas- Like this a lot

    Orion- also like this

    Farron- not liking it

Gannon- again not too sure of it

Beorn- eeh...think pronunciation will get confused

also consider Apollo...I love this but DH vetoed it

Kudos on coming up with some strong but uncommon names!

  • With the exception of Sariah and Gannon, I actually know at least one person - grown adults - with each of the names you listed.  I never thought any of them were too out there (well except maybe Orion - I have a high school friend who named her third child that recently, and well, I just don't like it.)

The woman I know named Farris is stunningly beautiful, so I see that name and I think of beauty.

And I love Beorn ... but I named my first child Leif ... so I'm partial to those old norse and celtic names.

I love Ophelia! If our second had been a girl, we would have used it. I like off beat names and like most of your names, but this is my favorite. My older DD is Matilda and I adore my son, but I'm sort of mourning not being able to have Matilda and Ophelia.

  • I know an Eowyn.  Yes, her parents were LOTR fans.  Yes, she introduces herself like that.

I also know an Astrid.  It's alright.

Orion was on our list for a boy's middle name had this been twins.

I would wonder if Beorn's parents were LOTR fans or didn't know how to spell Bjorn.  I like it, but I'd use it on a dog.

I really adore the name Farris for a girl but it seems to be more commonly uses as a boys name? I always thought it had a feminine feel to it, I am pleased to know there are women named Farris. I think its a name a person could grow up and into, unique enough to cause wonder but not so unique that you side-eye it.

On a side note, I do appreciate your all of your opinions and alternate suggestions. Elowen is one I really liked.

My male dog is named Ferris, as in Bueller.  I would never consider it a name meant for a girl.  It is masculine or a funny reference to the movie or the wheel.
  • Astrid and Ophelia from your girls list -- Atlas is our boys middle name so that gets my vote.

  • I'm a huge fan of The Band, so when I hear Ophelia I think of the song, not Shakespeare. I kind of love it. I would never use it because it's really NMS personally, but I'd love to meet an Ophelia.
  • Toss everything but Ophelia
  • I love love love the name Ophelia. I think it's beautiful. However, I find she's a very weak character in Hamlet - I think she comes off as mousey. And as PP said, things don't end well for her. I think the association between the character and the name is too strong, even though it is a gorgeous name.
  • Do no like Farris or Sariah, and not too keen on Eowyn either. The other girl names are fine, not too common, not too out there. Atlas is by far my favorite boy name on your list.
  • Sariah would forever be psoriasis
  • I see Gannon and think of the main boss you have to defeat in the Legend of Zelda video games.

I wasn't going to comment originally cause it's kinda an old thread. But yes. THIS.

  • Ganondorf is the full name, if you want to stick true to the game series and have the nickname available. I'm kinda a huge Zelda series fan, so my geek heart can get in board with that one haha.

Also, I graduated with a Gannon. It suits him, and I remember really admiring his name growing up.

    Yes.
  • Instead of sariah, spell it Soraya. That's a Persian name for a girl. Very pretty.

The rest are too Jetsons for me, sorry.
