I just feel like I can't work anymore.

I have a desk job, but the work is really stressful. I can't stand my boss and the hours that I have are killing me. I work 6:30am till 3pm but it's constant bullshit from the time I get there until I leave. My back and pelvis kill me in that chair even with all the adjustments I've made and my feet are so swollen by the end of the day that I just want to cry in the tub.

I know there are some ladies who are dealing with it until their due date or just leaving a little before their due date, so please don't be too harsh. I just don't know what to do. This sleeping 3 hours total at night and then doing a 630a shift is killing me.

Boss won't change my hours. :(

Re: I just feel like I can't work anymore.

  • I was feeling that way last week the insomnia was killing me. Have you tried melitonen? My doc told me to take either that or a Tylenol pm just one or two nights to get myself a full nights rest. It helped tremendously. Obviously it's not going to help the crummy hrs, the not so great boss or the feeling of uncomfort, but if you are well rested it will be a whole lot easier to handle it all. Also if you can afford it there is no shame in taking off early for leave. Do what's right for your body and for baby.

  • I'm a massage therapist and have cut back so much in how much I do in a day. I used to be able to preform 4 or 5 a day. I'm down to two. I own my business and can essentially do what I want, but I feel guilty wanting to stop sooner rather than later. It's a very physical job and it tires me out. On top of that I am taking care of the house and everyone's needs and wants with little to no sleep because I toss and turn all night!

I have no good advice at all. I get it though and I'm sorry!
  • I can't help with the no sleep or the scumbag boss, but maybe you should try to get up and walk around a few steps every hour or two. I have the opposite problem- I have to stand up all night, so taking a seat is something I enjoy :)
  • I'm sorry you're dealing with such a crummy work situation! I had been planning to leave my job a long time ago and return to school, and when we found out we were expecting I stayed longer. Finally Id had enough and my last day was Friday. I feel a little guilty but I did end up going back to school part time while working so it's not like I'm just sitting around the house. I was so exhausted and had no time to take care of myself let alone responsibilities around the house and extra studying. I just hope I can stay motivated until the semester ends for school. If you need the time, I'd take it early. You have to take care of yourself so you can take care of that baby!
  • Will your insurance cover a chiropractor? You could make appointments for yourself for right after work. Getting the adjustment might help you sleep better too, and will give you something to look forward to after work.
  • Before I stopped work I bought a kneeling chair and that helped give me a little more time. Found it at staples.
  • Thank you ladies. I'm just so tired! I miss full nights sleep on my belly, lol. I think I'm going to figure something else out because I can't take this anymore. If it's nit my boss then it's the irritating people I deal with at work, lol. Ugh. I'm so glad others relate and I'm not being a huge baby.

  • I can relate to ur situation. With my first pregnancy I stayed almost until the end. This time around has been so different.
My job is both physically and mentally draining. Lots of heavy lifting, moving, pushing etc.
On top of all of this I got into a pretty serious accident last Friday and been off work since. Going back to my doctor today to see what I can do. I don't feel well enough to return. The sciatic pain has kicked in full force and I was in so much pain last night I cried.

Everyone is different so don't feel bad about how you are feeling.
  • Is working from home an option? My commute is a bitch and with the icy winter we've had its been even worse. And now with how much I've been swelling getting through a work day is impossible. I work in public relations and thankfully can do a lot from my computer and phone so my boss is allowing me to work 2-3 days a week at home and only come into the office when I have meetings and such. It's really helped.
  • If it's not an option for you to stop working now, I would try to figure out what is in your control to modify to make things better.  I'm feeling pretty damn stressed at work with a new boss and am definitely dragging most mornings from the lack of sleep (I usually work from 6:30am-5pm and end up walking about two to three miles each day going back and forth between our different buildings downtown).  So here's what I'm doing to manage my chaos:
    • Scheduled massages every six weeks
    • Brought in an exercise ball and foot stool to alternate how I'm sitting and moving around at my desk
    • When working on something at my desk, I listen to music on my headset to zone the annoying people out a bit
    • Eat lunch away from my desk, so I get a mental break from everyone
    • Figured out the only shoes my feet won't swell up in and only wear those and NEVER take them off at work (or they'll swell up like crazy)
It certainly doesn't fix everything, but I'm just trying to manage what is in my control and let everything else go because there isn't a damn thing I can do about it.  Good luck!
  • I kind of understand how you're feeling. I work a crappy job with terrible customers that has me on my feet constantly moving 8-9 hours most days. I don't get breaks, I'm lucky if I find time to eat or pee. And there is no time to sit ever. I'm 31 weeks and currently scheduled 35 hours this week. Some days my body is so tired I just want to quit. But we have to move this month and that's expensive and we need the extra money
  • I take a Tylone PM about 5 nights out of 7. Also put Epsom salt in your bath. I work a desk job and have a 18 month old (my husband works 80 hours) O I have a copy paper box under my desk for my feet and a pillow in my chair too lol

  • I wish it was possible to work from home. I'd love that!

  • i would kill for those hrs! i hate waking up early, but my hrs are different every day so i never know until the week before, and i work until 10 some nights and a 12 hr shift a couple times a week, 9;30-9:30. (which i would perfer to be in bed by 9) i work retail so im on my feet. and i have to work until i go into labor, unless the dr tells me otherwise. and on my days off i clean the house and get groceries... sorry vent over lol im trying to be positive and praying for nicer weather so i could go outside every once in a while and get some fresh air! i think that will make us all feel a little better!
  • I'm honestly glad I don't work at this time, because I REALLY don't think I could with the dizziness, fatigue and headaches. I've already been hospitalized, and have been out on bed/pelvic rest twice. So needless to say, I'd have a hard time keeping a job right now!
  • I would love to be able to sit all day at work. Unfortunately I'm on my feet all day, some days without a break. If you can't financially afford to quit then count your blessings cause it could be worse.
  • I've felt the same as you the past month. I had so much stress and anxiety at work and without enough sleep and with another little one at home and being sick... The list goes on. I was about to quit one night (I even packed up all my stuff just in-case I didn't come back after the wknd). After talking to my husband we decided to wait until I had my doctor apt, I expressed all of my concerns to her, and she agreed it wasn't good for the baby so she put me on disability early. Such a blessing. Good luck, even if you do continue!

  • What helps me is that I have a coworker and we chat a lot and vent to each other and laugh. It makes work stress and ridiculous people/situations at work much more bearable. If not a coworker, maybe there's a friend or relative you can text. For the physical stuff, move around and take breaks. Buy your favorite tea and make it at work when you need a relaxing break treat. Wear loose skirts and shoes a size bigger to work to make your body more comfortable. Use a pillow on the back of your work chair to support your spine better. Also, on the worst weeks and days, I update my resume (pregnant or not) and look at what jobs are out there. Sounds like your boss is a jerk and maybe you should look hard for a new job toward the end of your maternity leave (if you need to go back to work). Also see if your doc can write you off on disability early- I've heard usually they can do 3 weeks off before the due date due to our condition. Good luck and hang in there! <3
  • I don't know what I'd do without all of the support and advice you ladies have offered me. I appreciate it so much, especially as I battle to sleep again tonight. My body isn't having it and I'm sore.

I got a call from another doctor today and apparently now my pregnancy is high risk due to being overweight and having gestational diabetes. I'll be having weekly appointments from this point on from what I understand. I'm stressed because I could use at least one more full paycheck from my job...and likely .uk could get fired because of this if my appointments don't fall on my days off. HR changed my schedule so I'd have Wednesday's off because my normal OB appointments a t e on Wednesdays. High risk doctor wants to see me Thursdays. Ugh!

Anyone else feel like it just never ends? I'm literally in count down mode...count d ok enjoy till mid April when I quit my job and never look back and count down till mid May until my sweet pea arrives.

  • I teach kindergarten so I certainly understand being exhausted! I got a Snoogle body pillow as I was always a back sleeper and it's helped me so much! I find I get much better sleep with it! As much being on my feet with 5 year olds all day is exhausting, I haven't had any swelling at all and my doctor attributes it to moving around a lot so maybe see if you can take walks during the day, or bring in a large medicine ball to work that you can sit on to give you more comfort?
  • Sorry about the work situation, I cut my hours from 45 to 31 this week. I'm 30 weeks today
  • I love my Snoogle too- it was the best maternity purchase (besides the great many bottles of antacids) ever! I'm planning to put all of my maternity stuff in a big plastic container in the garage so we have it for baby #2 (if we are so blessed).
  • So sorry! This should be a fun and joyful time but it does get hard at the end. With my first pregnancy I was put on bed rest 4 weeks before my due date due to high blood pressure. It was awful because I actually felt great. This time I'm miserable but completely healthy! I teach 3rd grade so I'm on my feet all day. I'm so grateful for an understanding boss and a good class. I really hope your situation improves. I promise it's all worth it in the end!!
  • Hope it gets better
I work 12+ hour graveyards on my feet as an RN... I feel the exhaustion you speak of! Here's to a speedy 3rd trimester
  • Since you have a desk job and it's not the physicality of it that is really bothering you, I'd suggest working on changing how you react to the BS you encounter each day.  It can only bother you if you let it.  Maybe develop a little more of a "what's the worse that can happen? They fire me?" attitude.  Because really...if it's that bad, what is the worst that can happen?  I'd hang up my ultrasound pic or put it somewhere I can look at it easily and when the BS starts to get to me, look at it and say, "my baby is more important than getting upset at this."

To help with the swelling and soreness, going for a short walk every 30-60 minutes might help.  You're pregnant; I'm sure no one will think a thing of you needing to use the restroom that often.

    Good luck to you!
  • I'm a PTA and lift heavy ppl all day. I started wearing compression stocking since I'm on my feet all day and it helps alot. Work 10 hour days. Once I'm home I don't want to leave the couch. Haha. Try the stocking and maybe keep feet up a little bit at work on a stool. Try and stand and stretch out as much as you can. Be strong. You can do it.
