Overwhelmed by what to buy..

Were FT parents and totally overwhelmed with where to even start when it comes to getting baby stuff.

What order did you get things in? How the hell do you know what to get and what isn't essential. Eg, do we really need a monitor with a screan and five million different bottles?!

Feeling so overwhelmed by all the things. Commercialisation in the States is on an insane level (I'm England and the shops here are like superstores and send me over the edge!!)

Any tips?? Thanks x

Re: Overwhelmed by what to buy..

  • Are you having a baby shower? I am also a FTM and buying only the big ticket items that I know our friends and family will not be buying. A crib, co sleeper,  car seat, stroller, and glider. After our shower in May we will fill in the gaps on things that we still need.
  • I agree with @Handree. I think it's a good idea to buy the big ticket items, and then if you're having a shower and people will be buying things, then put those smaller, less expensive things on the registry....once your shower is over take an inventory and make the other purchases.

I'd definitely recommend Lucie's List or going onto Pinterest and getting a list of things that you know you will NEED vs. things that are nice to have. Get necessities first, and then splurge on the "just because" and convenience items that maybe you didn't get from your shower.

  • baby doesn't need much. Most of the stuff is for your convenience. I didn't even use a monitor for DS cause we lived in a little apartment. Will use one this time around b/c we moved to a house with 3 floors.Living in a small apartment helped us stick to really what was essential. We didn't use a pack n play, a bouncer or a glider chair.

As far as bottles, don't get too many at first. Baby might hate one type and prefer another. We didn't even use bottles for the first few months because we breastfed. Got a small hand pump that worked really well. Didn't get an electric pump until later(wanted to make sure breastfeeding was for us)

In the beginning most important was the carseat, the stroller, the co-sleeper/bassinet, swing, the swaddle blankets, receiving blankets and reg blankets, burp cloths, the lullaby mobile and sanity lol.

The crib sets are pointless. It's really for decoration, we hung the quilt on the wall with a curtain rod. Wish I would have just done without.

    Hope this helps!

  • I don't have too much advice for you... just a whole lot of empathy!!!! The diaper aisle alone was enough to make me curl up and want my mommy! At this point, we are just saving up money and waiting until after the baby shower to figure out what is left. Good Luck! Hang in there!

Baby doesnt need much as pp said its all for your convenience. However some may not agree with me, but I personally am getting a swing. Not a brand new one in case he doesnt like it, but if he does it will help out in rocking him so I can get a shower in or do some housework.
  • Thank u!!! Good tips xx
  • Stick with the basics. This is our second, so feel a little more prepared for what to get and not. For six months you can use a bassinet out pack and play for bed. When you transition baby to own room you will need a bed. A swing for sure. We didn't get one right away, but when we did it was great! A bouncer seat is essential. This is small and portable. You will need something to put baby in when you are dressing/showing/cooking... a rocker is nice, we got a used one. Bedding set is useless.Notsuppose to cover baby with heavy blankets. I'm still not sure about the ststroller. This was our big ticket purchase, but I think an inexpensive stroller might have been ok instead of the one where the car seat carrier snaps in. I recommend Dr. Brown brand bottles. DS never had spit up issues or tummy issues with these. A monitor is something we will get this time because I have two and will need to be attentive to both, but didn't get for first. We bought used our borrowed most of our stuff. Hope this helps.
  • @clairelange   We are FT parents too and I think we have completed our registry... phew. The only thing we are not registered for is our monitor bc my husband said he would research that. We also didn't register for any furniture bc we are buying that. If you would like to take a look at my registry (so easy using thebump) you are more than welcome. It could give you a good idea of what we chose and what we decided to skip on... like receiving blankets (we are going to take a bunch from the hospital), but we did register for swaddles.
  • Awwww thanks Audi681!

The registry thing is new/alien to me as I'm English and it's not something we really do. Having said that I think I'll use it for "essentials"
  • also, depending on where you're registered it might be worth it to add the furniture to your registry anyway and buy it yourself. BRU gives you a percentage of all of the purchases made from your registry back as a gift card after baby is born, which could be used for toys as your kiddo gets older, things you later decide you want for convenience, or diapers/wipes/baby soap/etc. :) We registered for our crib, glider, and dresser, but are planning on purchasing it ourselves since they're big ticket items just so we can get the rewards.
  • Take a deep breath! It is overwhelming but baby truly doesn't need that many things. Also if you are registering anywhere they will usually provide you with a sort of guide to help you along. Things I highly recommend: NOT getting a ton of bedding/crib bumpers for the crib(all baby needs is a Mattress cover, sheet and very thin blanket if that) all the bedding and bumpers greatly increases the risk of SIDS, if baby will be in your room at first then hold off on the monitor but I loved mine for nap time, Swaddle blankets and learning to Swaddle is invaluable, a little bouncer or seat for baby, car seat/stroller travel system, onesies, little tub to wash baby in, baby soap and lotion, diapers and wipes, bottles that don't have a ton of parts, burp cloths, breast pump (Insurance may cover). I also recommend the little health pack that comes with emery boards, nail clippers, thermometer etc. Some things you will get once you see you need them but these are the basics. Definitely don't stress and know baby Doesn't need every thing in the store or the top of line swing etc. Good luck!

Oh wow, I know exactly what you mean! My husband and I are first timers too, and we are struggling already with dealing with stores. I think I might order most things off of Amazon and Ebay! I can't handle big department stores...

Not to mention, I like to know what the quality is when I buy things, so I have trouble in overwhelming stores where everything is so in my face!

If you are having a Shower, I recommend using BabyList for a registry! Getting your guests to stick to your registry is a whole other gamble! ;)

BabyList is AMAZING! And does not rope you into any one store, I am not sure that you have Babys R Us or Buy Buy Baby in the UK, but online registries are great!
