Grunting Baby @ Night

It would seem my Son has this Grunting Syndrom. His doctor doesn't believe it's reflux since there are no other symptoms. We are seeing a Pediatrician in over a week to check it out and be certain.
It drives us mad when we are trying to sleep. My husband can't sleep through it while I've learnt to sleep through most of it.
Who else is going through this or has and when did it finally stop??
Thanks!

Re: Grunting Baby @ Night

  • I'd never heard of it before! Hope that he can work through it soon and that you and your husband can get some sleep!

  • Might be gas or reflux

Mild reflux causes non-painful "spit-up." If it's severe, it can lead to painful night waking (often misdiagnosed as "colic"), and stomach acids can be regurgitated as high as the throat, causing grunting noises and even wheezing like baby asthma. I suspect this is what's behind your baby's grunting.

  • Yeah this is the thing. Could be mild reflux or nothing and he will grow out of it. I hope the Ped will have answers for us.
Thing is, he doesn't do it until the last quarter of the night. A little here and there maybe but nothing like 4am, onward.
There is a thing called "Grunting Baby Syndrom" and this is likely smth babies grow out of if there is not reflux.
He even sleeps on an incline. I've propped up his bed few nights in a row incase it was reflux but it didn't help.
I hope we solve it soon!

  • Both my boys did/do this. My destination grew out of it and I suspect my youngest will too. I see it as a sort of self soothing. I have a hard time sleeping through it but it never lasts too long. I hope your LO grows out of it soon for you!

  • Good to know! His grunts are loud and constant. It's crazy and we loose sleep :(

  • Does he take a pacifer?  Maybe something in his mouth will ease the grunts.

  • My 12 week old does this too! Never wakes himself up from it but wakes us up! He usually has gas once I do pick him up so I figure it's either that or he's frustrated and trying to break out of swaddle or is too cramped in rock n play. We are going to transition him out if both soon so hopefully that helps! I think gas is the most likely culprit for our guy though!
  • Yes he loves his soother. Doesn't seem to help. It really seems he does it worst as the night goes on. It's soooo odd lol
Hope he's going to grow out of it.

Yes he also tries to get out of swaddle but he sleeps the best and longest in one. So I'm affraid to take it off!

We literarily would sleep wonders if not for his grunts n

  • My little guy did this for the first couple of months until we switched him to gentlease formula. I do BF and only offer a bottle a couple of times a day or if we are somewhere where breastfeeding is not convenient. It seemed like he had much less gas and no more grunting while he naps/ sleeps! Hope this helps. Good luck!
  • We supplement w formula too. A Similac Sensitive. But he started this before when it was all breast milk. Not from birth however.
    I really hope it's a phase.
