Known donor + meds/monitoring/dr?

Hey everyone,

I know our situation is extremely rare, but if anyone else has experienced it...it would be one of you!  If anyone has any experience here, I'd love to hear it:)

As most of you know, after conceiving our first with a known donor, we have now been trying to conceive our second with the same known donor at home since August 2013 with a miscarriage in the middle.

It's so discouraging.  We have an appointment set up with a fertility specialist next month.  I suspect she will not have a lot of experience with couples with a known donor, though I'd love to be surprised.

Has anyone here done known donor at home insemination (the low tech way)...while getting monitored by a doctor? Or receiving fertility drugs? Or other support from a specialist?  We'd love to continue what we've been doing, but would welcome the consideration of additional medical support.

I'll be asking lots of questions, but since specialists take a long time to get into, I thought I'd ask here to get a preview of what the specialist might suggest, if anything.

Thanks:)

    Hey There,

I'm going to PM you some info as well, but it seems to me that this would be right up the alley of an RE, if they were to compare it to a hetero couple who has had trouble TTC.  Many REs/OBs will move to meds/monitoring as a first step for those couples (instead of IUI).  I hope you are able to find success with an undersanding professional!

Married to my amazing wife 6/12/10
    TTC since 6/11
    Unmedicated IUI #1 - 6/28/11 - BFN
    Unmedicated IUI #2 - 7/25/11 - BFN
Robotic Myomectomy (Fibroid Surgery) - 11/15/11
    Unmedicated IUI #3 - 4/24/12 - BFN
Progesterone Supported Leuteal Phase IUI #4 - 6/21/12 - BFP!!
    Baby Boy G Born 3/24/13

On to #2, are we crazy?
    IUI #1 - 11/28/14 - BFP!  Beta #1 (11DPO) 34, Beta #2 (13DPO) 101, Beta #3 (20DPO) 3043
Ultrasound at 6w4d shows a single, fluttering heartbeat.  Say hello to Sticky Ricki!

  • I agree with JGY -- for a lot of hetero couples, the first step with an RE after testing is just meds + monitoring + TI (timed intercourse), so it wouldn't be much different for you to do the same routine with home insems.
    Married my wife 8/2007 ~ TTC #1 since 7/2011
    9 IUIs = 9 BFNs
IVF October 2012: 22 eggs retrieved, 17 fertilized, 5 frozen
    ET #1: 1 blast = BFP; Blighted ovum discovered at 7w5d; D&E
    FET #1: 1 blast = BFP; Missed m/c discovered at 9w5d; D&E
Karyotyping: normal ~ RPL Testing: normal ~ Hysteroscopy: normal
    FET #2: 1 blast transferred 10/25; BFP 10/31!
    EDD 7/13/14 ~ Induced at 37w4d due to pre-eclampsia ~ Born on 6/28/14
    *Everyone welcome*

  • Hello
Maybe that is a bit too late now of an answer. I had the same thing done. Known Donor via an RE however I am living in New York and the laws are extremely strict. Doctors would only accept working with me if a directed donor program was completed. Even then New York requires additional criteria (sample has to be collected within the first week of testing, psychological evaluation etc.). Also check on the known donor registry forum. This is a board that is all about known donor and the success rates. They are not bad at all. My donor had 4 children 2 of them on the first try with one women being in her 40s.
Let me know if you have more question. Especially with the legal sides of things. I learned the hard way.
