Anyone finding it to exercise and stay active during the brutal winter months?

I used to be fairly active but found that I couldn't get myself to the gym during this brutal winter (Toronto is consistently around -30 to -20 degree celsius for the last few months). By the time I get home from work, I'm hungry so I have to eat, then I need to wait for stomach to settle and next thing I know I'm exhausted and want to go to bed. It's a vicious cycle.

How's everyone doing on the fitness front and any tips for someone like me who lives in a city where an extreme cold alert is issued every other day?

  • I'm with you with the extreme cold alerts. I'm in Wisconsin, and we've been having below freezing weather with negative wind chills for so long I can't remember when we last had a thaw. Unfortunately, I'm not really being active. I was doing a twice weekly swim aerobics class, but it just ended. I would go, but I was always tired and had to force myself. The timing was not optimal, either, from 7-8pm, which is always when my energy dropped hard even before I was pregnant

  • I run outside but one week it never got above 20 so that was out plus we got a foot of snow. Trying to make it to 6 months before I stop, so close (its next week).
  • I've been doing a prenatal work out video at home. Once I get home I'm not going out again in this cold
  • I had the same problem. I live in nyc and am so lazy because of the cold weather. I started doing prenatal yoga classes on my lunch break and that's really helped! I have more energy and am much less achey than I was. Since its during lunch hour i can still get home early evening and relax. I'm lucky to have a YMCA across the street from my office so it works really well.
  • Thankfully I have a zumba studio less than five minutes from the house. It's fun enough that I am motivated to go (I would love to do three times a week but it's usually twice a week at this point) a lot of my mom friends and my MIL go too so I feel like I have no excuse, haha. I do a lot of modifying at this point so there isn't as much jumping/ high impact but it's still keeping me in shape! Good luck finding something that works for you and stay warm up there!

It's nowhere near s child here in GA, but the wintry weather had still pushed me indoors for the most part. I'm riding on the recumbent bike a couple of times a week and am doing the Level 1 workouts on The Brazil Butt Lift videos. I tried to jog this morning, but my 5k run turned into a 5k mostly walk when my lower abdominal area started hurting. Modify. Modify. Modify. I just keep telling myself that anything is better than nothing.
  • I have a yoga studio 10 min away but my prenatal class kept getting cancelled due to snow, ugh. I'm have an elliptical accumulating cobwebs in our basement, I should probably check it out. My biggest issue is not weather, but that I've never been someone who liked to work out in any way shape or form. I'm trying to do so now so that I can even handle the effort of labor. Right now I'm dying after a flight of stairs!
  • In Manitoba we've had a very cold winter, feeling like -40 or -50 with the windchill some days. Luckily there is a gym on my way home from work so I try to stop there a few times a week.

When it's to cold or I'm too lazy, I usually just play on YouTube and find some fun at home exercise videos to try. Ordering a series from a professional would probably be ideal though.

Or maybe even trying to keep yourself moving by taking on some tasks around the house like washing walls or baseboards?... I should take my own advice with this one.
  • Can. Not. Get. Motivated. I live in Ohio and it's just been so incredibly cold!! My usual exercise is some "fast" walking with my dogs. It has just been too cold to take them out....so I don't go either. We were in Florida about two weeks ago and I thought that would help kickstart some exercise when I got back. Nope. Fail. Too cold. This is just the winter that won't end!! I don't want to see my breath anymore and I don't want to clear the snowballs out of my dogs paws anymore. Make it eeeeeend!!
  • I've been going to the gym before work for about two years now. It's part of my routine and I've maintained it so far. I hate getting up early, even after two years but I have far fewer excuses at 5:00am than I do at 5:00pm. Besides, I worked really hard to get where I'm at and while I may be slower now, I refuse to sit on my ass for nine months and throw it all away.

  • I just wanted to pop by and say way to go ladies!!!!!!! I wish I were more like all of you !!!!!!
  • 26 weeks today and I live in SW Florida. I've only been going to the gym the last three weeks routinely. Before BFP I was lifting and running for about 2 years. I had some problems with And SCH and pre-term contraction (not BH, real ones) and had to stop. I now have a 15lb weight lift limit and can only do cardio so long as k don't have contractions.
My family ran our first 5k this morning! DH and my 5 year old jogged and ran, and I stayed with my 4 year old who walked and jogged.

  • Do a prenatal video!! And make someone do it with you!! My fiancé does it with me and it's so fun and we just laugh the whole time but also get a good workout. And you never have to leave your house!
  • Absolutely! I live in ny and it's been so cold for so long now! I have a previa and all I'm allowed to do is walk for exercise as per my MD so that's been pretty impossible lately! Can't wait for spring!
  • I've started trying to do air squats randomly throughout the day, anywhere and everywhere... Try to see how many I can squeeze in. So good for the pelvic floor
